Hello,
The bios setting Disable Unused PCI Clock YES was the culprit!
First system specs again:
IC7Max3, flashed to bios 16
512 MB Geil PC 4000 ram
37 GB WD Raptor SATA, raid controller
80 GB WD PATA, IDE1
Lite-On DVD and Yamaha CD/RW on IDE2
SB 5.1
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, Sapphire
Antec True 480 PS
Windows XP Pro, all updates
This system would not cold boot without first interupting power (pull plug,
turn off computer power from surge protector, etc). Fans would spin, HD
whir, no beep or post.
Went to a friends house today who has more computers than me, and especially
an IC7G plus one of those PCI card troubleshooters. PCI error check shows
code F8, which we could not find a reference to in the literature or on the
web. Moved components around tried three different power supplies, Nvidia
board GF3, Corsair 3200 versus my ram = same problem. System will restart
just fine, but from a shutdown, it would not post without power interuption.
Reflashed bios with boot sector switch, no solution.
Started playing with default bios settings that we have never changed.
SOLUTION: Disable Unused PCI Clock by default is YES. On my system,
turning this to NO fixed the problem. My buddies IC7G with two SATA drives,
Corsair ram, GF4Ti4200 works perfect with this setting at YES.
Am I the only one in the world who has experienced this problem?
Cheers,

NO!.
I have an IC7 and for quite some time was overclocking a P4c 2.6 at 250 X
13. I decided to upgrade a bit. I swapped out my three 120GB IDE drives for
two 250GB SATA drives in RAID-1. I had to go from Bios 13 to 24 for the
drive support.
I also went from a P4c to a P4e 2.8 that I can't seem to overclock all that
well. 250 fsb is a no post and 240 (for 3.37Ghz) is stable but once the
machine is turned 'off' it will NOT restart without turning the PSU off and
fighting with it for a while.
Also, when it does finally boot, each and every time the memory buss will
revert from '5:4' to 'SPD' which is 1:1 by default! And then the PC will not
boot at 240Mhz memory.
Once its booted it'll run Prime and Folding and game for hours without a
hiccup. Turn it off for the night and your doomed!
I tried everything, I'll try this today.

Had the same problem.
System was installed and working fine with 2 Maxtor Plus 9s on mainboard
SATA (Temp setup waiting to free up 2 Raptors)
Cloned the main drive onto 2 Raptor 74s raided on chip SATA, system started
fine, shut down then couldn't restart without removing power first. Moved
the Raptors to the mainboard SATA, worked fine.
Just moved them back to the on chip SATA & switched off disable unused PCI
clock, system working fine.
Also tried the Maxtors with on chip SATA & disable unused... enabled, worked
fine
On my setup it's the combination of Raptor drives, on chip SATA & disable
unused PCI clock switched on, remove any of these 3 & it works a treat.
Andy.
System:
IC7 Max3 (BIOS 16)
P4C 3.2 Gig
1024 MB Corsair PC4000
2x 74 GB WD Raptor SATA - currently onchip raid
Pioneer 117 DVD
SB Audigy
Radeon 9800 XT, Hercules
Windows XP Pro, all updates

Hi Andy,
Good thing Google Groups will keep this archived for others who hit this
snag. I worked on this problem off and on for three weeks and was about to
RMA the board. The one thing I give Dell as a nice perk is their community
forum with moderators. I wonder how many false RMA's would be prevented if
Abit and Asus had official forums?

Hi Tom,
Trust me, I have been lurking in this forum ever since I bough my first Abit
board (BH6). You have been helpful to many folks over the years. I even
remember people semi-flaming you for having Network Certified in your posts!
Keep up the good work.
As the boards and Soft Menu have gotten more complex some of the bios
settings are bewildering even to the relatively experienced. I know for a
fact that configuring SATA raid on the IC7Max3 for me was pure trial and
error.
Cheers,
Carl

It didn't work for me!!
Same problem. Won't boot after its shut down. .
Always defaults to SPD for bus (1:1) and memory timings (2.5-3-3- !! My
memory will easily run cl2-2-2-6 up to 220Mhz (ZMS3500) at 2.8v.
I got my hands on my last CPU that ran in this system at 250fsb, 5:4 for
months and months! The only thing that is different is the BIOS and 2 250GB
WD SATA drives. I used BIOS 13 for ever, had to use 24 for the 250GB drives
and I can't go back, array won't recognize.

Sorry Fish,
I don't run two SATA drives in RAID, just the one SATA drive using the RAID
controller for best performance. Maybe if you post a new thread with your
BIOS settings someone will see a solution?
Cheers,
Carl

And Abit's documentation explains what this PCI clock is
intended to do ? Might help if Abit's documentation on all
BIOS settings was complete with functional explanations.
It is fairly obvious that Abit employs technically incompetent
documentation writers with near-zero communication
with either the MB designers or the BIOS developers.
This situatiion has persisted since at least the BH6 era.
For example, my original IC7-G manual has Highpoint
references in the so-called troubleshooting section....

yeah, no argument that the manual could use some improvement... however, by
the same token, Abit manuals are a dictionary compared to manuals for some
mobo's I have built out in the past...

So what.............comparing one bad apple with anothert
does not make the bad apple any better.
No excuse for a company that errr.. prides itself in catering to
enthusiasts --- the very people who need good technical
explanations when optimizing their systems. Working with
the present documentation is analogous to trying to fly a
plane without any instruments.
With your long support of Abit, have you not cultivated
personal contacts within the company with whom you can
communicate systematic problems ---such as the poor
documentation -- and actually get something done about
it ??
