Hello Smile

I've just installed Windows XP SP1 and it went fine (it even booted from the
harddisk, when Windows needed to reboot during the installation).

But now Windows wont boot from my disk. It reads a bit from the harddisk,
and then just black screen and nothing more happens.

My setup:
Abit IC7-Max3
Pentium 4 3.0 (800 FSB)
2x512MB Corsair DDR4000
Western Digital WD2000JD (200GB Sata)
(my system has not been overclocked yet)

The WD2000JD is connected to the SATA1 connection on the motherboard.

Also, I've connected a DVD reader and a DVD writer on IDE1 slave and IDE2
slave.

When I connect the disk to SATA3, it boots up fine. But connecting it to
SATA1 should also work, since SATA3-6 is just an "addon" Abit put on the
motherboard, so SATA1 should also boot, since it's build in to the chipset.

I've updates the bios to the newest version, and ran a Western Digital test
program and it reported no errors.

Any suggestions?

One more question - I prefer connecting my harddisk to SATA1, because it
wont take up bandwidth on the PCI bus, and I've read some tests saying that
the ICH5 sata controller is faster than the SiliconImage controller, when
not using RAID. Is that correct?

Thanks Smile

/Jesper

there are posts on the Abit forums on this topic that might make good
reading. there is no question that this setup will work, it is just a
matter of proper bios configuration in most cases.

how do you have the Intel ICH5R SATA controller configured in the bios? is
the raid mode enabled (this will work even if not running a raid) and if so,
is the raid ROM enabled also?

to configure the system with raid mode enabled, you would need to have
installed the floppy-based driver via F6 during the early stages of the
install. also, it is important to be flashed to the newest bios as there
were issues in the Intel SATA bios (assuming it is even enabled) in the
earlier revisions.

Thanks for your reply Smile

just go to www.abit.com.tw and then look for a link to the forums on their
page.

right. however, be aware that you can still run with raid mode enabled and
the raid bios enabled and not have to set up a raid. this type of setup
changes many behaviors of the controller as well as the path the data takes
as in raid mode, the data is not on the PCI bus but from my understanding,
in IDE mode, the data on this controller does run on the PCI bus.

my pleasure.
