Post subject: Abit IC7-G SATA problems
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>abit (more info?)

Hello to everyone,
My specs P4 3.0Ghz, Abit IC7-G, 1,5G DDR, 3 HD (1 IDE, 2 SATA),
Geforce 6800, XP Pro, Heroichi 500W silent pro. My problem has started
when I decided to plug in another SATA II HD. Sata slots 1,2 were
occupied so I choose slot 3. I managed to boot into windows and
everything was working perfectly until I decided to initialize the new
drive and format it (from computer management, disk management). The
system freezed on me, then after a while it became very slow and every
time I tried to do something, it took for ever to do. So every time I
try to touch the new drive everything is fine, as long as I do not try
to mess with it.As soon as I try to format it or see it's properties
problems start. Is there a specific change I should do in BIOS settings
in order to make it work? The drive is a SATA II but I changed the
jumper and transformed it to SATA I. Please let me know that there is a
solution

Best Regards

Marios

To me it's sound like your hird drive is not working properly, i can't
see how this could be caused by motherboard. You should try your HDD in
other computer to see if it's motherboard related problem or it's HDD
problem.

So, did you already have the SiI3112R controller enabled in the BIOS (and
have a driver installed) *before* you connected this new drive?

If not, have you enabled the 3112 controller in the BIOS, and did you also
enable its RAID ROM?

What brand and model is this new drive?

Have you installed a driver for the SiI3112 and if so what build is it?

Maybe. As you haven't given us enough information at the moment, it's
impossible for us to make anything other than rough guesses.

Have you tried leaving the jumper in the SATAII position?

There no doubt is an explanation for what's going on, but you haven't given
us anywhere near enough information to determine reliably what the problem
is. Give us some more info and we'll be better placed to help you.

Yes I already had the drivers installed Sil3112 Rev.2,I had enabled the
3112 controller in the BIOS as for the RAID ROM I am not sure, can you
give me details so I can check if it is enabled? Sorry for the omissions.

I have unplugged the drive from SATA 3 slot and plugged it in SATA 2
slot and everything worked ok, formatted it and messed around with it
with no problems. As soon as I plugged in to SATA 3 or 4 slot problem
came back again. I can see the drive but as soon as I try to copy
something to it the system hangs for a few seconds and then comes on
again. So there is a communication problem with SATA 3-4 slots and my
mobo. How can I solve that, probably through the BIOS settings?or is it
purely a software issue?

Best regards
Marios

As with memory modules you should use the correct slot combinations with
SATA (as recommended by your mobo manufacturer), use 1&2 (best) or 3&4,
DO NOT use 1&3 or 2&4 or problems occur as you`ve found.
