Post subject: IDE Channel Without HDs
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>gigabyte (more info?)

I have a Gigabyte 8KNXP and am planning to configure it with all the
hard drives on the SATA controllers and no hard drives on the IDE
channel. I plan to have 4 drives (two in a non-RAID and two in a
RAID0 configuration on the built in SATA controllers).

For the IDE channels, I plan to have a CD burner and a DVD burner.
What is the best IDE configuration for these? I presume it would be
to put them both on one channel with the CD as master and DVD as slave
and then disable the other IDE controller...is this correct? If so,
would they best be placed on IDE 1 or IDE 2 or does this not matter?
Will any configuration (such as disabling an IDE controller or using
IDE 1 for the CD and DVD) interact with or otherwise screw up the
other SATA drives with the OS on one of the SATA channels?

Thanks.

Howard

According to the manual,

IDE-1 is for normal (non-raid) IDE Hard Drives (2 drives)
IDE-2 is normally used for optical drives (2 drives)
IDE-3 and IDE-4 are for the GigaRAID IDE Drives (4 drives)

In my system I have 2 WD Raptor drives in a RAID 0 on the SII SATA
Connectors, 2 Seagate SATA 160gig drives in a RAID 0 on the Intel SATA
connectors, a DVD Burner and a CD Burner on IDE-2

I've got a similar configuration, except I've got a DVD burner, CDRW and a
DVD drive.
The DVD burner is primaary master on IDE1 and the CDRW is prmary master on
IDE2 with the DVD drive as slave.
On yours, if all you are going to have are the two optical devices, I would
have them both as primary master on IDE1 and IDE2.

The 'rules' as I know them:

1. Dont mix optical and HDD
2. Put the faster device on Master
3. Use all channels if you can.

So, Steve H's answer is best. Timothy Droullard is still correct in that
many people would otherwise put a 4x CD as slave on IDE1 and cripple their
systems.
