The IDE controller on my DS3 motherboard sometimes decides to take a
vacation. I only have my DVD and a CD drive hooked up to it, so sometimes I
never even know it's gone until I use these devices and they're not there.
In my system settings, there is a yellow exclamation mark next to it (the
ide controller) when it happens, but so far, a simple re-boot seems to cure
the problem until it happens again. Anyone have this happen to them? I'm
afraid that eventually it'll fail permanently and then I would need a new
motherboard - and I don't want to do any computer surgery until the new
chips Intel released last week get a bit cheaper...

Try uninstalling the controller driver and then reboot to let the OS.(XP?)
redetect the drivers....might need to "refresh" from the mobo CD.

What he said. Another approach might be scandisk and defrag on your system
drive. It sounds merely like the drivers occasionally fail to load - disk
maintenance would usually relocate them to another part of the drive (in case
there is some bad spot on the platter) and change the speed/timing of the
loading sequence, either of which may solve your problem.
