Post subject: IS7-V and Celeron CPU
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>abit (more info?)

Hi all,

I have just spent a fruitless day trying to upgrade my system
Motherboard Abit IS7-V
CPU Celeron 1.7 S478
AGP Card Tornado GeForce 2 MX
( MX400 AGP SDR 64bit 64MB)
RAM 256 PC2700 DDR333
Seagate Barracuda HDD

Result Not a peep or anything on Screen

The dealer I purchased from (Dab.com) claim on their
site it is Celeron and Pentium 4 compatible.
But on The Abit site it only mentions the Pentium.

Does anyone know if this should work OK

Also I note in the manual that it will not work with
3v Graphics cards - Errmmm! what is mine ??

Also tried it with a PCI graphics card.

Still nothing.

Any comments or help very welcome, please

I can't say for sure that it is Celeron compatible as I have not tested
that. as for the no peeps at all, did you remember to connect both the
regular ATX power connector and the 4-pin AUX ATX power connector? if so,
have you tried it out of the case on a safe work surface with cpu, heat
sink, ram and video installed, no other connections to the mobo except power
(both power connectors). no front panel leads and no drive ribbons. try
shorting the power on pins manually and see what happens.

Yes, all connections triple checked.
Not tried it stripped down, but would rather wait before I do anything
else till I am certain that the CPU is OK with the MB.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Thanks Tom,
Yes I have triple checked all connections.
Will try a minimum as you suggest.

I have now found a compatibility table on the Abit-USA site, which states
that the
Celeron is OK on the PS7-V.
So tried the test suggested by Tom, also cleared the CMOS as per the manual.

Still not a flicker on the screen, on either AGP card or PCI graphics card.
How can I tell if it is CPU or MoBo ??
Graphic Cards and RAM and CPU were fine a week ago on a BioStar
which I had to return as it had a fault on the LAN circuitry.!!!

Cheers Gavin

the only thing you can do at this stage is to have components tested in
another known good working system. if you have access to a local computer
chain (not a national chain like Best Buy) that you can get to test the cpu
in a known good board or test a known good cpu in your board...

According to the Abit spec, the board only supports
533/800 MHz processors. Your 1.7 is a 400MHz.
You need to try a 533 or 800 MHz processor in your board
to verify that the problem is indeed the processor.
If it is, I suggest that you sell the 1.7 on Ebay and
invest in a real Pentium processor. With your choice of
memory and some real 533 or 800 processors, you may
have to run the memory at CPU/MEM ratios of 4:5 or
5:4 for best results. PC3200 or higher would have
been a better choice.

Do not throw out the baby with the bathwater....
