I'm thinking of perhaps upgrading from my 4600+, Asus A8N SLI Deluxe
motherboard to an Intel Core Duo system.
I've read that the best chipsets are the nvidia 680i and intel 975, but I've
read that there may be a few bugs in theh 680i chipsets.
I don't overclock, and plan on getting a e6600 cpu, and perhaps 2GB or 4GB
OCZ Memory.
Oh, and will there be any problems/limitations running 4GB like there is/was
with the Nforce4 chipset (having to run slower spees with 4 dimms). I know
there are problems running 4GB with XP, but I'm planning for Vista.
Any help/opinions/experience would be appreciated.
I will also be transfering over a 300GB SATA2 Maxtor HD, Enermax 535w SLI
PSU, and evga 7800GT PCI-E. |

Are you considering SLI ? That is something to wiegh in as well...
You know with the "BADAXE2" you will get a solid performer, expect
more tweaking with the Nvidia chipset. Personally, i would consider
the e6700...but price is alos a consideration. It's just that from
what I've read, the e6700's can (if your lucky) achieve at or near the
6800 extreme level of performance...

No, I probably won't be using SLI. At some point I will probably upgrade to
an 8800 GS or GTX.

Are you kidding? I'm getting beyond an E6800 performance with only the
E6600.

First of all, you have the wrong chip. You want Core 2 Duo, not Core
Duo. Very different chips.
For most people, the best version of the chip is the E6600, the lowest
cost version that has the larger 4MB cache system. It's about $300.
As to chipsets, probably the 965 if you don't need anything real fancy,
or the 975 if you do want more features.
There are problems running 4GB with Windows XP. It has nothing to do
with the motherboard, processor or chipset, it's an XP problem. It's
resolved in the 64-bit version and in Vista, but not in standard 32-bit
XP, for which 3GB or even 2GB is better than 4GB.
