Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>msi-microstar (more info?)

I have a curious fault on first boot up of the day,my "seagate barracuda ata
iv 80gb" is not detected, if I press
reset ,still no drive,it just hangs. However, turn off, then immediately back
on,then magically drive is detected and system boots up ok.This only happens
when pc is stone cold, if rebooted upto 5-6 hours(the longest period I have
tried in one day)after being turned off then drive boots perfectly.
The system spec below has been running perfectly for 2mths until replaced
Ibm deskstar120 gxp with the seagate.

2500 XP
MSI K7N2-L latest bios
512mb corsair xms2700
leadtek winfast a280le(GF4200)128mb
sony 48X cdrw
350w psu
xp home

I have also tried in a new pc I have built for a friend with exactly the
same result.
2200XP
MSI Kt4v latest bios
256mb crucial 2700
MSI gf440 mx
sony 48X cdrw
350w psu
Xxp home

As stated, once booted, drive performs perfectly on both boards.
I have used the diagnostic utilies from seagate to no avail, they
report drive as in working order!

Any ideas please!
Neil

Well, from what you've stated it sounds like the HDD is definitely the issue
since the problem occurs on two different setups. Try moving your HDD
jumper from what you have it set on now, i.e. master to cable select or vice
versa. Sometimes jumper settings will make a system act erratic.

.......and bah!!! on Seagate IDE's..........

Sometimes peculiar cold behavior can be altered by changing the HDD Delay in
BIOS to a few seconds (you likely have already tried that)?

Drive came supplied set for cable select so when that didnt work,I tried
setting to master, with the same result.
I have not tried the bios delay,I will look into that.

I have a similar problem with my K7N2-Delta -ILSR, but not from cold boot.
That is always fine, my problem happens when waking up from standby using
the ST3 function. Some times (there doesn't seem to be any pattern to this)
I get HDD activity but the system fails to restart, monitor light remains on
standby and so forth, only a hard reset will get my system running again.
Looking in the event viewer (Win XP Home, all updates applied) it shows a
"no disk error". I have applied the latest BIOS and still have this
problem.
