My system is in my sig below.

I am building my first machine with a friend who has built one before.
After installing all components we tried to power the machine up. The
case fans, CPU fan, and video card fans all run but there is no video
signal. The D-bracket indicated that the CPU was incorrectly installed
or defective (the only signal I get is two red over two green). Also,
when I try to power down, the machine does not respond to the power
button or the reset button on the front of the case.

1. We swapped my friend's video card into my machine - same problem.
2. We swapped my friend's CPU into my machine - same problem.

My case has no speaker, so I dont know if there's a beep that would
correspond to the system "posting."

I bought the MB at Fry's but the CPU at NewEgg.

Suggestions?

Try building the computer outside the case, and start with minimal
build. I had a similar problem, ended up that a PCI card just wasn't
seated well. If the MB boots outside the case with only video,
memory, HD and CPU, start adding extras and see where it stops. If it
goes all the way when you get to the last component, you either have
an extra stand-off grounding the MB where it shouldn't, or you just
had a loose card. Re-build the computer IN the case, making sure you
only have the standoffs needed, I think you need 6, and making sure
the PCI cards seat fully. Even if you can snug the screw on the
backplate of the PCI card, it may still not be fully seated. If that
doesn't fix it, try different memory, or try yours in your friend's
machine, if it works in his machine and you can't get it to boot at
all, call MSI, or e-mail MSI and see if they can help you.

Oh yeah, when you build the computer outside the case, just find the 2
pins that the power switch connects to and short them with a
screwdriver to turn the system on...

Make sure the BIOS clear jumper is in the correct position. I have had
a few MSI motherboards that the correct position was incorrect in the
manual. I just put together a system with a K7N2G-L motherboard and had
the exact same situation as you. I got the same lights on the
d-bracket. What worked for me was to re-seat the CPU. Also, unplug the
AC cord completely for a few seconds and then reset the bios. I have
had several MSI boards fail to boot unless the AC cord was removed for a
bit.

Stay away from Fry's!! Just MHO!!<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Just built similar system and had same symptoms.
Cause was fsb set to to 200 instead of 166 in bios.
Cure was to set jumper J10 to 100 safe mode : system then came up.
Then reset J10 to user mode and bios to 166.
All then OK!
