Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>elitegroup (more info?)

I am not able to get my Seagate 40GB 7000.7 to boot from a K7S5A Pro.
First it detects the drive and says "OK" but then it says -The
previous device failed to boot VFAT error- and goes to the floppy then
the CD drive. It never gets out of the BIOS control as far as I can
tell. The odd thing is that it detects the drive as UDMA 5 during boot
and I think it is only UDMA 4. I'm using an 80 conductor cable and the
drive is set as a master on the primary channel.

When the system boots from the floppy the whole 40GB is accessible, it
is only during the BIOS boot sequence that it fails with a VFAT error.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you have an optical drive on the same IDE as your hard drive you can get
problems. It seems this board prefers hard drives on one channel by
themselves.

Try different settings in the BIOS to detect your drives. Try Auto first and
if that doesn't work change it to User.

The BIOS doesn't always detect drives correctly on POST telling you that you
have a UDMA 5 drive on the first screen, then telling you it's working in
PIO Mode 4 on the next screen. It doesn't affect actual performance.

You may want to try different settings for your drive jumper. Put it on
Cable Select (CS) or try using no jumper at all. (It depends how many hard
drives you're using.)<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
