Mainboard: K7SEM, ver 1.0
OS: Windows 2000 Pro
Original BIOS: Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG, K7SEM Ver:1.1 05/31/2001.

I just flashed up to Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG, K7SEM Ver:1.2b 01/27/2003.

Prior to flashing, running the "BIOS Agent" from www.esupport.com, showed my
OS: Windows 2000 (correct)
CPU: AMD Athlon 1200 mhz (correct) MAX: 600 mhz?????

Prior to flashing, running the "BIOS Wizard" from
http://www.motherboards.org/biosup.html
reports that my BIOS does not support Enhanced Disk Drive Support.

BIOS vs. 1.1e from http://www.ecsusa.com/downloads/k7sem.html specifically
fixed the latter, to give HDD support for drives larger than 137 GB.

The BIOS I flashed was 1.2b. I assume that the BIOSs are cumulative and do
not have to be upgraded in order, one at a time, to get each new feature?

With the flash to 1.2 b, neither of the problems are resolved.

The Max CPU still shows as 600 Mhz.
The test report show that EDD is still not supported.
I cannot get the BIOS to recognize my WD 120 GB HDD.

Any ideas, anyone?

Thank you,
Bob

You shouldn't upgrade to a newer BIOS unless it is reported to fix something
you are having a problem with. You are using some type of Athlon 1200 which
isn't an XP CPU. ECS has only cared about the XPs for a couple of years now
so they could make AMDs approved motherboard list. Try an older BIOS like
from 2001. You do not have to update a BIOS one at a time. The newest should
have all the previous amendments but can leave older CPUs behind and cause
problems.

WD drives often have recognition problems. I have seen fixes that involve
cutting the first two wires on your IDE cable. WD has a special cable they
will send you if you can convince them about your drive recognition problem.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Thanks,

I've emailed ECS to see if they can answer the MAX cpu speed issue. If what
I'm reading is correct, I'm not getting what I paid for--but then it's and
ECS. still though if it said "specifically for CPU's up to 1.2 Gig, & it
did, I would think the Max CPU speed would at least be as high as the Max
the CPU can go.

There were several issues that need to be fixed, that's why I did the flash.
Also, one person, some weeks ago said that his K7SEM BIOS tests were showing
things correctly & he had just flashed to the latest. So I gave it a try--I
know flashing a BIOS is dangerous, but I'm about ready to get a new
mainboard that is a "real" one, with PCI slots and USB2 support.

But if anyone has a K7SEM or another mainboard and would go to the test
pages that I mentioned and try the test, I would be very interested in what
it came up with for your CPU type/speed and then the MAX speed.

Since this was one of the first K7SEMs off the line, I wonder if it wasn't
up to doing as advertised?

Bios Agent 3.23 would not run on my Win98SE system.
It would say "Searching for system BIOS ID. Please wait ..."
and, then in the same box, say "error reading results file!"
An earlier verson would not run either.
The dos version ran and, the bios.txt file is attached.

Re: "MAX Speed", their FAQ <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.esupport.com/biosagent/faq.html#FAQ5" target="_blank">http://www.esupport.com/biosagent/faq.html#FAQ5</a>
under
"6. The CPU Max Speed reported by BIOS Agent does not appear to be accurate
for my system."

States:
BIOS Agent does not detect or calculate CPU Max Speed. The information for
this parameter is obtained through the Desktop Management Interface (DMI)
built into the BIOS. The accuracy for this value depends upon how the BIOS
vendor has implemented support for the maximum CPU speed supported by the
motherboard. In some cases, this value may simply be a static number bullt
into the BIOS which the manufacturer estimated as the maximum CPU speed
which could be supported in the future at the time when the BIOS was
originally developed for the motherboard. In any event, BIOS Agent is simply
reporting the CPU Max Speed as reported by the BIOS. If this value does not
appear to be accurate there is nothing wrong with BIOS Agent and there is no
cause for concern if, for example, you are running a CPU speed greater than
the maximum value reported."

Can't run this one either. It tells me that the file is corrupted.
