Post subject: KT333 DUP IDE1/2/3/4 question
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>soyo (more info?)

I just got a new DVD burner and am having issues with it playing nice.
So here is what I have:

IDE1 Master = DVD-ROM Drive
IDE1 Slave = CDRW Drive
IDE2 Master = was LS120, now is Pacific Digital DVD+/-R/RW (pin to
master)
IDE2 Slave = was empty, but now is the LS120 drive (I moved pin to
slave)
IDE3 Master = Maxtor 80GB main drive, with 2 partitions
IDE3 Slave = Western Digital 80GB drive
IDE4 EMPTY for now

(I know strange configuration, when i did it i was going to stick
another 80gb on 3 to do raid, but decided against it later)

My issue is that before I added the DVD burner, which by the way is
really a BTC 1008IM DVD+/- R/RW burner repackaged as Pacific Digital
Mach 8x, everything was fine - with the LS120 as the master on IDE2.
NOW however, there are issues. First when booted up, the DVD burner
was recognized immediately and drivers installed (funny that the
drivers that windows used are from 2001 - are there better ones out
there? both PD and BTC didn't have any on their site), BUT, there was
the dreaded YELLOW EXCLAMATION POINT in the Device Manager. So it
sees it, but it can't start it. Here is the message:

"This device cannot start. (Code 10)
Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device."

So the first thing I did, was check to make sure the ATAPI pin
settings were correct. They were. I verified that both could be
configured as I am trying to do. For kicks, I deleted the DVD burner
from DEvice Manager and redetected it, still problems. Then I deleted
it and then I pulled the power cable out of the LS120 drive during a
reboot. Windows XP again recognized the drive, BUT THIS time it
didn't have the Exclamation point in the device manager, and seemed to
be OK.

I have a couple of questions:
1) What is the difference between IDE1, 2, 3, 4 beyond that 3/4 are
raid. In another posting under the DVD-TEch forum, someone mentioned
that I should have the hard drives on the "80 wire (fast) connector)".
What does that mean and does it apply to this Mobo. I thought that
on the kt333 board, 1/2/3/4 were all the same, just that IDE3/4 could
be RAID or regular IDE controllers. Is IDE1/2 really faster?

2) Then ultimately, what should I try to get this working? Just keep
moving drives around until I find a combo that fits? I should mention
that I have another WD80 waiting in the wings, as soon as I get this
figured out - just wanted to add one thing at a time.

THANKS!

Archived from groups: per prev. post (more info?)

With this setup I would have the:
DVD writer on IDE1 as a master
CDRW on IDE1 as slave
DVD ROM as a master on IDE 2
LS 120 as a slave on IDE 2
Do not use cable select!!!
Use 40 wire cables to connect all 4 units to the mobo. The Recorders
do not support the 80 wire cables and the ROM and LS120 do not need
them.

IDE 3/4 are faster--but will support ONLY hard drives. What you were
told meant 'use the 80 wire cables (required for anything faster than
ATA-33) with the hard drives; use 40 wire cables with the optical
drives.

Dave's point about Cable Select applies only to the optical
drives--the Western Digital hard drives likely would be better off
using Cable Select.
