I'm having difficulty getting my spiffy-fast Kingston memory to run at
400MHz on a Zenith 9CJS mobo. BIOS is flashed to 6/19/03 version.
The memory is Kingston PC3200, part # KHX3200K2/1G (two 512MB pieces).
Kingston rates it as 2 2 2 6, which is equivalent to the BIOS showing
2 6 2 2 (different order). When the motherboard recognizes it from
its SPD at 400MHz, it uses 2.5 6 2 2. However, the system runs poorly
with it at 400MHz, and not at all in Dual Channel mode. If I set the
mobo to use a memory frequency of 320MHz, it's fine.
A friend tested it on his ASUS motherboard, where he's running Corsair
3200 with similar clockings, and it worked just fine there.
At 400MHz, with one piece of memory, or two pieces in non-dual-channel
configuration, it will usually get past the POST, though it'll also
usually have a CMOS checksum error and change everything back to the
defaults. Windows XP Pro will usually fail at some point in the boot
process, with various bluescreens.
In a dual-channel configuration, it won't even POST; a speaker on the
motherboard will give a repeated long beep.
I tried "underclocking" it at 400MHz with settings of 2.5 7 3 3, but
that didn't help.
