Archived from groups: alt>comp>hardware (more info?)

I wanted a 17" TFT screen, but they all seem to be 1280 * 1024 native
resolution. I find this resolution too high for a 17" - everything appears
too small.
But in lower resolutions text looks blurry due to interpolation.
Is there a hardware reason why 17" TFTs are not available in 1024*768
native?

Yes there is a reason. The manufacturing groups set the world standard
resolution for the 17" and 19" LCD monitors at 1280 x 1024 by definition.
You will find no exceptions on the market.

I use a 17" LCD with 1280*1024 resolution, it's not a problem at all. If
things appear to small, just increase the text size. It just means
better place on the screen Smile

I'm not an expert on the subject, but the pixel size would be a good
guess. If you have a 17" with 1024*768 native resolution the pixels
would be too large and the picture would seem blurry anyways. Not as bad
as when you reduce the resolution from the screens native, but still not
good.

A 17" with 1024x768 native res. would not seem blurry but
the opposite, pixelated (if examined closely rather than at
a distance).

IMO, if OP wants larger then the obvious choice is a 19"
LCD.
