I'm trying to set up RAID 1 on my box, but Windows is already installed
(for quite some time). I started with my IDE drive. I then added two 250
GB SATA WD drives, after I configured them in the BIOS and the RAID BIOS
(mirrored), the array was healthy and it showed up as a drive on
Windows. I used Acronis to copy my IDE drive to the array, I
disconnected the IDE drive and the array became the boot device and life
was good - for about two weeks. Then one or both disks started clicking.
I rebooted and it worked for about twenty minutes before clicking set in
again. I disconnected one of the disks, disabled RAID, and booted off
the IDE drive again to transfer some of the files from the SATA drive
from the two weeks of using only the array. After about twenty minutes,
that SATA drive would start clicking too. I have tried moving a single
SATA drive to different SATA ports (I haven't tried every one, but most
of them) and it still does it's clicking routine. That is where I am now.
Notice:
1) I did not create a floppy to install the drivers (it seemed to work
without it anyway).
2) The SATA drive (either one) would start clicking after about twenty
minutes - maybe sooner - whether RAID was enabled or now. Up till then,
the drive would behave as expected.
3) The RAID array seemed to work as advertised (I didn't test it) for
two weeks before the drives started clicking.
Does anybody have any ideas on what is going on? It seems that it is a
problem on the SATA rather than the RAID side since it happens whether
RAID is enabled or not. I'm suspecting the SATA part of the motherboard
now (I'm using Windows XP Pro Version 2002 Service Pack 2), but maybe
there is a driver issue...
If it is a motherboard issue, rather than buying a new one, I'm
considering an external RAID enclosure. Does anyone have any experience
with them?
Is there a way, after I've gotten the motherboard RAID sorted out, to
use my IDE drive as a backup device? The BIOS doesn't allow you to
choose a particular hard disk to boot from and it seems to defer to the
IDE if there is more than one boot disk.
I didn't realize this would be so long so I especially appreciate your
time reading this as well as any advice you might have.
Thanks,

Drive clicking means that the drive is failing or has a power problem.

Thanks, Stephen. That's interesting. The drives aren't that old and I
find it odd that they both would fail at the same time. Maybe it could
be a problem with my power supply? Any thoughts?
Thanks again,

I had 'odd' problems with a motherboard raid sys, this was cured by
installing a dedicated raid card (about $350 for a 'real' hardware raid
card.
I subsequently was informed that Asus were aware of an issue but thought it
had been cured by a bios update.
I have also experienced disk failures that were at least partially due to an
iffy power supply (3 Samsung Sata drives failed in the space of 2 months,
all under warranty & different batch numbers)
Currenty running Adaptec 4 Port raid card 3 Sata, 1 being hot swap, 2 ide
600w quality branded pwr supply, run 24/.7 for last 2+ years

Thanks for the info, old man. I've considered an external raid
enclosure, but I haven't made up my mind yet. I don't think they are
bootable so that makes things a little more complicated. A new case and
power supply at least are on the next shopping list.
Thanks again for the reply!

I had a power supply fail on a Abit VP6, where the MB would not see
any of the drives other than the cdrw.
On a another pc, the p/s didn't have enough amps for just one more
hard drive. They would randomly spin up/down or not be recognized.
Then there is the loose connection at the power plug, those molex
connectors just don't grab tightly after a several remove/connect
cycles.

I use an internal card which is bootable, with its own boot bios
