I just ordered two 2800+MP cpu's and I am looking for advice on best RAM and
MB to get.
This is to be a server I'm building and I already have an SATA RAID card to
run four SATA drives.
I already have an ethernet card so that part isn't necessary to be built
onto the mobo. And since it is a server, no need for onboard sound, either.
Thanks!

The MSI K7D Master seems to work well with one 2800 MP+, I haven't tried
two yet, but a few others have. I've been using mine for almost a year
without any problems.
I think the latest MSI BIOS fixes some compatability issues with dual-
2800s in the K7D.
One annoyance about the K7D is that MSI put a *sleeve bearing* fan on
the Northbridge of the motherboard. Recently the fan started making
noise, so I had it replaced with a third-party fan. The fan was
40x40x10mm in size so it wasn't too hard to find a replacement.
I would suggest you also check the forums in www.2cpu.com (forums) and
see what people have to say.
You can BTW disregard reports of the K7D running CPU2 at a higher
voltage...the hardware monitoring feature reports the DDR voltage (2.5V)
as the CPU2 voltage.
Though I currently have the K7D, I have also had a Tyan 2466 (which I
sold to a friend since he needed a system ASAP). Given a choice between
the two, I would probably select the Tyan because I think they did a
better job with the design of the on-board CPU power supplies. I
wouldn't bother with IWill or any of the other guys for MPX boards.
As far as RAM, I use Kingston PC2100 DDR ECC CAS2.5 (2.5, 3, 3)
Registered memory (I can lookup the part number if you want it, but it
shold be easy to find). If you're building a server, absolutely go for
ECC & Registered. A lot of people have had issues with using non-
Registered memory in the Tyan boards.
People have commented that the Crucial unregistered PC2100 modules
worked very unreliably, and I've even heard of people having problems
with the Crucial Registered/ECC CL2.5 RAM in MPX based boards.
Also, Corsair now makes "TwinX" memory that's ECC & Registered, which
they're aiming for the K8 machines. The nice thing is the K8 memory
controllers only have DDR PC2100 266MHz ECC/Registered support, so those
modules should work for you. You might want to take a look at those, but
speaking from experience Kingston is tried and true.
Finally, make sure you have a really good power supply. You may hear
people suggesting the "Enermax 550" but that's really a piece of junk.
The Antec TruePower 480 has been working beautifully for me (though it
does put out a bit of heat). My system has a single MP2800+, 1GB of RAM,
a PCI-X U320 SCSI card w/3x10K RPM SCSI drives on one channel, and a 40x
CD-ROM, 44x CD-RW and DVD-RAM on the secondary channel. The system also
has a GeForce Ti4600. Even under the heaviest loads I've never
experienced any lock-ups or problems.
If you have any other questions, please ask!

wow Vincent thanks for such a thorough and generous reply!!!
This helps me quite a bit make some decisions.
I'll also go to 2cpu.com and post.
Thanks!

You might be luckier than me, most of the net users aparently were.
But, here are my few cents:
After my experiences, I wouldn't really recommend it. Mine is still
unstable (freezes once a day) with any PCI card I dare to stick in under
W2k, so MSI techs decided I should run without PCI cards. Because the
AC97 onboard sound chip sounds like a WorldWar2 radio (by design
apparntly), I can't have sound on the machine. Neither USB 2.0 because
that chip is also fucked and they shipped an add-on PCI USB 2 hub which
I can't use because of the same PCI issue.
Also it has not enough driver support under Linux, no sensors for
example. It's quite uncomforting to know you can never find out what the
temp of the 2nd CPU is, while on Linux you also have no info whether the
fans are up or the chassis is about to toast.
Yeah, the MSI CoreCenter hardware utility is always crashing, MSI PC
Alert III has display issues, and Sandra complains about the non
DMI-compliant BIOS (also the latest 1.91).
That much about the K7D Master-L, run away while you can.

This sounds like a memory or power supply problem, though it also could
be a bad board.

I wouldn't claim the sound is perfect, but I've been listening to music
through it for over a year and it doesn't sound any worse than my Yamaha
YF-7xx PCI based sound card.

Just wondering, are you putting the PCI cards into the 64-bit/66MHz
slot? Those slots only support "universal" or 3.3V PCI cards. The USB
2.0 card needs 5V so it has to be placed in a 32-bit/33MHz slot.

I understand...but I was under the impression that the hardware
monitoring was done via the SMBus on the 760MPX. I would then think you
could read this with the Linux utilities that can handle the 2466, etc.

My experience has not been as horrible as yours, and I haven't heard
anyone having the specific problems you mention. Maybe you were very
unlucky?

I replaced the power supply (a Thermaltake 480+), same thing. I didn't
replace the memory, as I noticed the relationship between PCI cards
presence and crashes.

Come on, I don't know that Yamaha card, but the onboard _really_ sounds
like net radio or the music when you're put on hold on the phone... I've
read also others opinion about the sound, so maybe you're the very lucky
one here (or less demanding)

Tried them everywhere. When inside, they do work, it's just after 4
hours the computer crashes. Freezes, I mean. Anyway, USB 2.0 should be
on the board not an add-on, at least that's what you read in the MB
description.

I'm no Linux guru, I tried what I found as 'monitoring package' under
stresslinux (lm_sensors)
In the meantime I'm still hoping to get a sound card which is tolerated
by the board. A PCI-32, as I didn't find any good use for PCI-64.
I can live with the other issues, it's just I certainly would not
recommend it to others
