Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>abit (more info?)

Thought others might have some information/interest. I was having some
stability issues and so I started to pay close attention to voltage
settings. Bumped DDR VCC up to 2.7 volts for stabilty , CPU Vcore at 1.55.
I'm worried my Antec True380 may be inadequate because of the CPU Vcore
fluctuations. Anybody else paid close attention to variation under load?
Load Test: ran Prime95 balanced test (CPU load went to around 50-55% by Task
Manager)
per Abit EQ:

Idle Temps/voltages Load Temps/Volts
CPU Vcore 1.52-1.54 1.47-1.49 fluctuating
CPU Temp 40 C 61 C
Sys Temp 32 C (forgot)
PWM 34 C 51 C
CPU Fan 2445 RPM 2800 RPM
Other voltages: seem relatively stable and about where they should be.

System:
Antec True 380 in Antec Sonata Case (great case) w/2x120mm fans
Abit IC7-Max3
3.0 P4
1GB Kingston HyperX PC3500
2 WD 36.7 Raptors on ICH5 in Raid0
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128
Pioneer AO6
WinXP Pro, DX9b etc.
No overclocking, memory set to auto by SPD, game settings auto.

No errors on Prime 95 or any real problems on 3DMark, but I have lost sound
in a couple of games, and had crashing issues with Ghost Recon and "Access
Errors", and a couple of unknown lock-ups. Also ran memtest86 for1 hour with
no errors. Loaded some new sound drivers (3.53) so perhaps this helps, but
bottom line: is the CPU Vcore fluctuation acceptable? Have others observed
such a deviation under load?

Thanks for any information or comments (even rude ones provided there is
some kernal of truth!).

the fluctuations don't bother me as they are only a few hundredths of a
volt. I take it you are using the onboard sound?

as for the other settings, if you plan to overclock you would want to set
the NB manually and the FSB:DDR ratio as well. I would also recommend
taking the ram timings off of By SPD in the advanced chipset section and see
what you can set them to and make them happy... go for the lowest settings
you can run and not loose stability.

Your fluctuations are normal. The Vcore is actually *required* to drop
under load, it's called 'active droop' and is a feature of switch-mode
power supplies that helps to prevent dangerous voltage spikes.

I don't know squat 'bout Intel boards, so I'll leave solutions to the
other folks...

This is well within the +/- 5% fluctuation allowed.

1.5 - 5% = 1.425
1.5 + 5% = 1.575<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Thanks all for the re-assuring responses. Guess I'll just have to keep
tweaking (and perhaps get a sound card) to improve my stability and end the
sound dropouts.

I had temps like this. Then I removed my side cover to expose all
the boards and my CPU (AMD XP 2000+) is running at 44C!! The inside
temp of your case REALLY makes a difference on your CPU temp,
especially if all your PCI slots are loaded like mine are. Just
too much power being turned into heat from all my boards and 3
hard drives.

Try removing your side cover where you are looking at all your
boards, and see if the CPU temp doesn't drop at least 8C!
