Hey all,
Having a bit of a very weird problem. I have a Viewsonic VG700B LCD
monitor, and recently it's started causing whatever computer I attach it
to to crash. It doesn't give a "no signal" message, it powers up and
acts as if there's input from the VGA port but stays black, and the
computer just hangs. I've tried the monitor on multiple computers, with
no luck. When a different monitor is attached, zero issues. Tried it
on multiple PCs, and the same issue reappears. If I try to boot a PC
with it plugged in, the PC won't even post. ANY advice at all on this
would be appreciated. Until now I've had no issues at all with the
monitor so I would hate to have to throw it out if its something that
can be worked around or fixed. >> Stay informed about: Monitor causes computer to crash |

If the video cable for the monitor has a plug on each end...try a new
one...it might be shorted.
If that does not do the trick but it's out of warranty...check with the mfg
to see if they have an exchange program.
A few years back when LCD monitors were more expensive, I had one die after
the warranty ran out...
but the factory exchanged it for $150. (At then time a new one would have
been $400) >> Stay informed about: Monitor causes computer to crash |

Yeah, forgot to include the fact that I tried new cables as well as a
new power supply (runs off 12VDC so that was simple enough). Totally
lost on it. >> Stay informed about: Monitor causes computer to crash |

Check pins 13 and 14 to see if they are grounded. >> Stay informed about: Monitor causes computer to crash |

This problem is very strange. Maybe before you give up on it you can
flash the firmware on the monitor.

If you switch monitors on a PC that has already POSTed and booted,
does the machine crash? If so, I'd suspect that something is wrong
with the DDC pins.
See http://pinouts.ru/Video/VGAVesaDdc_pinout.shtml
Maybe pin 9 (VGA +5V output) is shorted within the monitor ???

You probably know this, but just in case:
Are you sure it's not posting? I had a similar problem with the DVI
input on my Samsung monitor. The system was posting normally, the
monitor just wouldn't show anything on the screen (not even BIOS). I'd
try a couple reboots, and eventually the monitor would light up.
Never did sort out exactly why. Samsung at one point suggested turning
off legacy USB - that did keep the frequency of "black boots" down but
didn't eliminate them entirely. Not sure why, since the monitor doesn't
have USB ports or a hub... I rebuilt the PC with a new mobo and the
problem doesn't exist on the new machine.
