Post subject: N8N Neo V2.0 cant see my old win2000 hard drive ?
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>msi-microstar (more info?)

I installed my new MSI motherboard, with Athlon 3000 ,, love the
speed.,
but i cant boot into my 2000 hard drive ?
I have a XP hard drive that works just fine,
at least after i updated the drivers.

i get that horrible blue screen of death.
hadnt seen one of those in years.
thought they were done with Sad

says to check for a virus, or (something about) the hard drive
(controllers?)
cant remember exact message?

i put the drive back on my old motherboard
(EPOX KT3A+) works fine, no virus ewtc...
drive is a SEAGATE 160gig

i thought it might be jumper settings, but i put it on the master cable
aloone,
same result.

ALSO,
if anyone knows how i can dual-boot this for win2k/XP
id love to do that.

Hi,

I'm assuming that you meant that you tried to just move the Windows 2000
drive from the EPOX mobo to the new MSI mobo, and got the BSOD when you
tried to boot the Win2K drive? Is that correct?

If so, that's because Win2K (and NT, XP, etc.) have a thing called a
"HAL" (Hardware Abstraction Layer) that gets set during installation,
and you can't "just" move an installation from one hardware environment
to another, because the HALs would be different.

You can try to move the Win2K drive to the MSI mobo, and do an "in-place
upgrade" (Google "in-place upgrade"), but note that if you do that, and
if that is successful, that Windows instance will no longer be
compatible with the EPOX mobo.

Hmmm...
ive moved hard drives around a good bit before and never had this
problem ?
is this only with newer MOBO's ?
maybe ive just been lucky.
or maybe ive always reformatted anyway at that time.
i reformat a lot...
so from what i read, reformatting W2k will let the W2k machine work
on this (MSI) MBO ?
thats kewl with me, i have a few hard drives i can swap around.
ill just throw another in the EPOX and reformat it too.

at least i know what to do now.
thought i was screwed...

do you know if its possible for me to dual-boot the W2k and the XP
(2 different drives) ?

thanks!

i did read th emicrosft "in place upgrade" for win2k
i figured a clean install would also work.
(i usually reformat whn dooing so, yea, thats what i meant, clean
install)

anyway, ok, now ive another problem.
i had it down to bare bones whn trying to figure this out.
no i plug my CDROM back in, and it doesnt work.
the computer boots REAL slow.
(still on XP)
i tried several CDROMs'/DVD's all doing the same thing.
tried rebooting a few times, cleaning the reg, reinstalling the MOBO
drivers...
ARGGGG....

well thanks,
if you have any ideas about this one, let me know,

Brad,

I'm assuming that when you say "reformat", you actually mean doing a
"clean install"? If so, yes, when you do a clean installation of Win2K,
the installer figures out and builds the HAL for that installation.

It' possible that you have moved a drive with a working Win2K
installation from one machine to another. That might work if the mobos
of the two machines are "close enough".

BUT anyway, I think that you may've misread my earlier post. You may
not need to do a "reformat" or "clean install" of Win2K, if you try an
in-place upgrade, per the link I posted. If it works, an in-place
upgrade would, optimally, allow you to move the Win2K drive from your
old mobo to your new mobo, and end up with a working Win2K on the new
mobo.

With an in-place upgrade, after booting to the Win2K install CD, you
first tell it you want to do an install at the beginning of the
installation process, but then you press "R" to do a repair.

This is as opposed to a "normal" repair, where you tell the Win2K
installer from the beginning that you are trying to do a repair.

This probably doesn't make much sense unless you've actually done an
in-place upgrade. It kind of floored me the first time I tried it (and
it worked).

Brad,

Are you sure that the jumper on the CDROM drive are correct for how it's
cabled (i.e., master vs. slave, etc.)?

Also, if so, try booting with no CD or DVD *in* the drive, and see if
that makes a difference.

i tried several times booting with no CD in the drive (s)
as far as the jumpers. good point...
i didt think that could be it, but heres what i got.
1 hard drive master IDE 1
1 CDROM on IDE 2 cable
now for the CDROM i have it plugged intot the master (of IDE 2)
or rarther, the end of the cable.
it says master on the end of the cable anyway...
but i think it assigns it as secondary slave when it boots up ?

i tried 2 CDROMs and 2 DVD's
one is set too master (shoulda caught that)
one to cable selct, and 2 to slave.
it did give me problems with every one though.
ill set all the jumpers, and try again....

thanks for the tip.

Hi,

I'm getting a bit confused, so maybe try this:

1) Set the jumper on the hard drive to master AND plug it into the END
of the cable going to the 1st IDE.

2) Set the jumper on the CD drive to master AND plug it into the END of
the cable going to the 2nd IDE.

That way, both drives are master on separate channels.

Then try your boot, and go into BIOS, and see what it says for the hard
drive and the CD drive. The hard drive should be master on the 1st IDE,
and the CDROM should be master on the 2nd IDE.

well....
i was offline for a day or 2.
it had to do with the boot agent, im still confused, but its working
now.
i am on my Win2k machine, which is what i wanted in the first place.
when it runs, this thing screams !
ive got a gig of 3200 ram now.

i did have a problem with the MOBO seeing the drive still.
a FEW times, i had booted up,
and the BIOS didnt see the drive.
i would just reboot (no changes)
and it was there. (strange eh ?)
i had a coule of other problems, firewall, and permissions...
i had done the repair in W2K and it worked,
then the thing just froze, when i rebooted i had a BSOD.
i changed the permissions by putting the drive on another machine,
i changed it to FULL permissions for "everyone"
long ago i read something about W2k and permissions,
so ive always just had Admin, System and User permissions set.

i "think" that was the problem, i did that and cleaned the registry,
and now it works like a champ.
(fingers crossed)
anyway, i guess its software now, so its trial and error,
and ill get it.
as long as my drive doesnt dissappear again.

if i get another problem, ill post a new thread.

thanks

Brad,

I haven't seen this feature for awhile, but in the past, I have seen
some BIOSes with a parameter where you can set the number of seconds the
BIOS delays before trying to detect hard drives (to give drives time to
spin up, I guess). Maybe your BIOS has something like that?
