Post subject: Abit NF7-S , Windows XP and Serial ATA striped set
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>abit (more info?)

Greetings,
I'm having trouble installing Windows XP on a striped serial ata set.
The problem is that my computer stops responding after a while, I say
"after a while" since it's not exactly at the same spot every time. At
first it looks fine, I press F6 to add computer specific drivers
during the install and I always get to add my SATA drivers from the
floppy provided with the mobo but when the computer is about to show
me the partition dialogue the computer freeze up. Only showing me
"Setup is starting windows". Sometimes I get to the partition menu,
sometimes I even have time to choose "Create partition" but I've never
gone beyond this point of install.

This is what I've tried instaling on:
Abit NF7-S motherboard
BIOS Award 6.00PG 10/09/2003 nVidia nForce 6A61BA1BC
AMD Athlon XP 1900+ cpu
Silicon Image 3112 sata controller (on mobo) 4.2.12
2 * Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 80GB sata hdd'ss ST380013AS

Help me! I'm just about to jump a cliff here! =)

Cheers,
Anders

Sounds like windows isnt recognizing the partition correctly -
what did you partition with? I use fdisk from a WinMe boot floppy

Could just be a memory/cpu/stability issue. To check for this make sure the
memory is set to 'By SPD' in 'Advanced chip set features' and 'underclock'
the cpu and memory by setting the FSB to 100MHz and the CPU/DRAM ration to
3/3 and CPU Interface to disable in 'Soft Menu'
....If this improves the problem then it points to a stability issue which
would usually be down to memory...also check cpu temperature in the bios.
What memory are you running?

You dont need to partition the drive. XP does it for you.

That's not the point, his installation appears to be hanging exactly as
the o/s tries to read his drive partition {according to his
description}- then 1.) he needs to look at what he setup the raid drive
with - since he said there's an exsisting partition already, 2.)does the
raid size show up correctly? or 3.) try to use updated drivers on the
floppy. Additionally - silicon image doesnt guarentee all drives will work.

No you dont...the XP installation gives you the option of FAT32 or NTFAT if
the drive is unpartitioned.

Hi Chip -

For a partition 32GB and smaller XP will format FAT32 during the install.
Anything larger than 32GB will require NTFS.

XP will install on a FAT32 partition larger than 32GB - but it must be
formatted prior to the installation. Windows 98SE/ME Fdisk/Format can be
use to accomplish this, as can third party packages, such as Partition
Magic.

You are incorrect. If the partitions are bigger than 32GB and you want
FAT32, then you have to format them yourself prior to installing XP. XP
will not format a partition larger than 32GB with FAT32.

Jef just confirmed this, and if that wan't enough, here it is from MS
themselves:

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://tinyurl.com/2nm8d" target="_blank">http://tinyurl.com/2nm8d</a>

(Actually, I said 40GB in my earlier post. I had got the size wrong, but
the principle was correct.)

I stand corrected...it must be because I've mainly been installing on small
drives but every time I've installed XP (that I remember) I've been given
the option to format in FAT or NTFAT...

He did not say there was an existing partition....He said he got to the
"partition menu" in XP which is where you would select to install XP in the
'Unpartitioned space'...XP then goes away and created the partition for you.
Trying updated drivers is not a bad idea...the same goes for updating the
bios because the latest bios has an updated SiliconImage bios insert.

Situation update:
Tried downclocking my CPU and Memory, Tried upgrading BIOS to latest
version and tried re-downloading drivers from Abit site to verify
functionality but there's still the same problem.

I'll keep trying and let you guys know if I find something. All ideas
as for where to look are welcome!

Thanks for your help and time!

Have you tried (as an experiment) removing one of the drives and trying to
install on a single drive rather than the RAID array?

Another thing you may want to try is installing on a regular ATA hard drive
(if you have one)....then if it goes smoothly 'Ghosting' over a drive image
onto the RAID array.
