This problem has been nagging me for ages. The system is a dual-boot w/a USB
logitech optical wheelmouse. On boot 98SE will sometimes fail to find the
mouse, on at least two occasions XP has also failed to find the mouse as well.
I tried disabling power management for USB (for XP) and it seems to have made
the difference, but 98SE still fails to find the mouse periodically. Anyone
have any ideas?

No Ideas but i am using the exact same mouse and windows 98se on my
Abit BE6II v.2 with no problems. I will try it on my other machine
which has dual boot 98se/XP and see if it has a problem with it. I may
not post back 'till tomorrow though. It's getting late and I need all
the beauty sleep I can get. ;^)

Is connecting the mouse to the mouse ps2 connector, with an adapter, a
problem?

Bill,

I installed the Logitech mouse on my dual boot system. So far no
problems with 98se, It found "New Hardware" and installed the drivers
from the Windows CD. When I first started XP it came up with a small
window at the bottom right corner of the screen that said "USB wheel
mouse" and just sat there. I thought it was locked up but I just let
it set and it must have finally installed the driver because when I
finally came back everything was working OK. In XP, Device Manager
says it's a Logitech USB Wheel Mouse and the driver is Microsoft
7/1/2001 Version 5.1.2600.0.... In Windows 98se Device Manager says
it's a "HID-compliant Mouse" and loaded the following Driver files:
MOUHID.VXD, VMM32.VXD(ntkern.vxd), MSMOUSE.VXD, & MOUSE.DRV. I don't
know if this will help you or not but it might give you something to
look at. I will leave the mouse on the dual boot system for a while to
see if any problems arise.

There was an issue with this Mother board and the USB mouse
and/or Key Board. There is a BIOS upgrade to fix it. check it out
maybe this is what your looking for.

I had the exact same problem and it bugged me for months. I scoured the web
for help and advice and came across none. Why you and I should have this
problem and others don't is quite a mystery. And the circumstances of the
problem were very odd (for me) too. For example, I had a PCI modem
installed. I found that when I removed the modem, the problem went away.
But another guy I found with the same problem didn't have any PCI devices.

I did in the end find a fix - for me at least. That was to install a
certain version of the nvidia chipset drivers. I think it was 2.50. I
remember that the earlier version had the problem, and so did the version
afterwards, but there was one particular version that fixed it for me. That
was a year or so ago. Whether there are later versions still that now have
solved the problem, I don't know.

You can search about it at www.amdforums.com on the Abit board. I made a
number of posts there at the time.

This is the way I used to connect my mouse and it always worked. The NF7s v2.0
is a nightmare on 98SE though because there are so many devices and so few
interrupts (especially since I'm using a Promise EIDE controller [I had
problems w/the NF7s v2.0 IDE drivers]).

Hmm. I've got a PCI modem as well. It's strange to see my optical mouse lit up
ready to go and windows 98SE telling me it couldn't detect a mouse. My USB
ports indicate they're functioning perfectly as well. I wonder if it could be a
BIOS setting? I know some BIOS's have a setting for legacy USB mouse or legacy
USB devices settings. Maybe I'll give those a shot and see what happens. If I
reboot a couple of times and perform a hard reset 98SE finds the mouse
eventually.

I'll have to give this a try, I know I don't have the latest NF7s v2.0 BIOS
burned.

If its the same problem I had, then I doubt if any new bios or any bios
settings will fix it.

Of course you could always use the USB to PS/2 adapter and run the mouse as
a PS/2 device. Pretty depressing to have to do that, but at least it works.

Do me a favour - try removing your modem drivers, unplug the modem and see
if the problem goes away. If it does, then at least you will know you have
the same problem I had.... and then I can search around my old posts and
find out exactly what my solution was.

BTW - its not by any chance a Zoom (aka Hayes) PCI modem, is it?

Chip, it's a Best Data call waiting modem. It's not a winmodem either. I'm
going to try flashing a new BIOS, it that doesn't work I'm going to just live
with it (as I absotively need my modem).

I wasn't suggesting you do without your modem. Simply that if you remove
the modem and the problem goes away, then I know its the same problem I was
having, and therefore I know I can fix it for you.

Up to you.
