I'm hoping someone may have seen this problem before. My cousin has a Dell
Latitude Laptop CPx. He brought it over becausethe keyboard was not working.
Turns out the numlock key was on so he was getting the numbers instead of
the letters. Or so I thought it were that simple. Pressing the numlock key
an number of times has no effect. I tried looking in the registry; verified
that there was no IntelliPoint software; updated keyboard driver & System
BIOS, all to no avail. I found a vbs script that toggles the numlock
setting, so I thought all was well. Turns out the Alt keys do not work
either.

So, I have three keys that do not work: NumLock and both Alt keys. I ran a
complete virus scan and spybot. Niether turned up anything useful.

It's running Windows XP professional SP1.

Thanks!
Doug

two suggestions:

(can't remember too much about the CPx series, but...)

have you tried pressing the "Fn" button? (if it has one... many laptops use
a "Fn" button for alternate key scancodes)...

have you tried booting onto a win98 floppy, to dos, and running a program
that'll display the scancodes as you press buttons on the keyboard? this
would significantly help you diagnose exactly what's going on.... (sorry, i
don't have a program like this that's user-friendly enough to let others
use.... and the one i do have, isn't currently accessible from where i'm at
right now... check the net for dos programs that'll display scancodes)<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I was looking for just such a program, but couldn't really find one that
would do escaped scancodes very well... it would to the function keys, but
not the "alternate function" - which happened to just be the same scancode,
but escaped, with 0xE0. (this is on a Logitech Elite)

Anway, there was a very good linux utility which should be part of most
distros, think it was scankey.

Not sure if it would be on one of the Live CDs from say, Gentoo. If it was,
you could just boot from the Live CD, and when it's done booting, just type
"scankey" and you'd be away.

I'm not just a number. To many, I'm known as a String...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

i'd consider even posting my sourcecode here if someone wants to update it
for it to be more user friendly.... but... if i'm remembering correctly, i
wrote the code directly in DEBUG (only having to go back once to fix a
forward jump)... it was really short.... saved int9... redirected int9...
looped until a FINISHED flag was set... restored int9, and exited......
the custom int9 handler would print every byte to the screen in hex... ESC
would clear screen... SysRq would set the FINISHED flag.......

very very simple program.... both make and break codes would print... but...
do laptops have a SysRq key combination? (usually Alt+PrtScr)<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
