Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>dcameras (more info?)

Hi,
Does anyone have an Olympus C-750 or atleast know a bit about it? I'm
thinking of getting one. The main thing that drew me to it was the 10x
zoom - I can't find another cam with that kinda zoom, at that size and price
range - why does no-one else do one?

Couple of questions:
1. Does the fact that it says 6.3 - 63mm, (35-350mm equivalent) mean that
the image starts off smaller than a normal 35mm anyway? or does it mean that
it will be the same as a 35mm zoom? ie. will an object 1m high be the same
size on the C-750, as on a normal 35mm camera?

2. Does the absense of an AF Assist light REALLY make a difference? Surely
itll still be ok for indoor pics with a little light etc. ?

3. What is people's general opinion on the camera? I'm not a camera
enthusiast or anything, I just want a camera which can be used normally on
holidays etc, but I really like the idea of the big zoom.

Thanks,
Daniel

I have a C-730UZ, (currently in for repairs of the zoom gears), that I
purchased in March of this year. It is 3.2 MP where the C-750 is 4.? MP and
has 4X digital zoom where the C-730 has 3X digital zoom. Most, if not all of
the features are the same on both cameras AFAIK.

1. They are giving you a rough equivalent to a 35 MM lens. Don't know about
being the same size as 35 MM.

2. With more than a little light is my experience. Unless you use the manual
focus and manual exposure option with flash indoors the autofocus will delay
the exposure too much for anything that moves. I.E. people dancing at a
wedding reception. You will get a picture of where they have been instead of
where they now are. While taking "no flash allowed" pictures at a nieces
wedding I found that I needed a faster lens like I am used to with my 35MM
camera. I got more unusable shots than usable ones.

3. This is my first digital camera and I too bought it for the 10X optical
zoom for R/C model and wildlife pictures. While it has a lot of features it
can be used basically as a point and shoot camera. Some of the features are
hard to navigate to in the menu, although I found practicing helped. Would I
buy this camera again? Probably not knowing what I do now. I would save for
a true digital SLR body allowing for choice of lenses. Or, buy a
professional grade scanner and scan in negatives that I develop at home.
(Very time consuming).

We bought a C-750 for sports (equestrian) photography when the model was
first released, and have found that it works well for that use,
particularly if you turn on full-time autofocus. Indoors, it's a bit
clumsy and the lens is slow, although useable with the flash activated.
Price-wise, I don't think you can beat this model if you primarily use it
outdoors and take advantage of the long lens power. If you don't need the
extended zoom lens, you'd proably do better with, say, a 5050.
