Ok, this is an old board but it still runs fine under Linux with a
PIII 933 at 133 mhz.

Last week I implanted 2 x 512 mb ECC memory modules into the system,
adjusted the jumper settings, but on POST the counter doesn't go
beyond 256 mb.

Is it possible to have these sticks working in this board and if yes,
what are the correct BIOS and/or jumper settings?

You can still download a manual for this board from asus.com. I believe
you'll find that 256mb modules are the maximum. Also, the BX chipset has
limitation with regard to high-density modules. Take a look at
http://homepage.hispeed.ch/rscheidegger/ram_bx_faq.html for more info.
