Not exactly sure why you are having problems if you only have a single SATA
drive connected to your controler. Have installed both Redhat 9 and
Mandrake 10 Official (still installed and operational) on the same MB with
one SATA drive without issue.
It may just be a Suse 9 problem - try one of the other distros and see if
the same issue applies. If so then it may be a configuration issue. Trying
a PCI card is not a solution unless the Linux kernal you are using has
native support for your controler built in. The chances of finding a 3rd
party driver for the PCI card's controler may be slim.
Linux sees my system as SMP (due to hyper-threading) and, for example, the
built in VIA PATA controler does have a Linux driver but only for the
non-smp kernal.
Don't know if this helps any but do know that the two versions of Linux plus
the run from CD version of that OS, sorry do not remember the name and do
not have it handy,show no problems and see the SATA drive just fine.
