When I try to enter standby mode and this problem occurs, the display
shuts down but the computer continues running. The only thing that
will restore it to service is a cold boot.
When I try to leave standby mode and this problem occurs the machine
powers on, but the display does not. Again, I must cold boot. I have
tried entering the power-down keyboard command "blind," without
effect. Of course there's no way for me to tell what if anything is
actually happening.
The configuration is: P4P800S system board; ATI All-in-Wonder Rage 128
Pro PCI display adapter; Plextor PX-716A DVD RW drive; diskette drive;
Seagate ST3120026AS hard disk; Microsoft wireless mouse; CNET PCI Fast
Ethernet adapter; Adaptec 2940AU SCSI controller; Windows XP service
pack 1.
The video driver is version 6.13.3279.0, which is dated 9/26/2001, but
is the most current version for this card.
I am running a current version of Norton Antivirus 2005 and a recent
version of Ad-Watch SE Plus. Both report that the system is clean.
Each time I boot I get a message that says in effect, "Norton
Antivirus has blocked a virus attempt to infect your system," and
these never appear in the NAV log. That seems odd, but it started
happening long after the system hang problem began, and long before
the problem became as frequent as it is now.
