Hi,
I've got a P4PE with 2.4b [@2.8GHz], 2x256Mb PC333 [@400Mhz] and its all
humming along nicely thanks )
However I've noticed on the ASUS site they say that you can upgrade to
800MHz FSB. Im running the 1005 bios already. They tell you to change the
processor multiplier in the bios......... its locked, just like its always
been!
Am I missing something here??????

I'm not really surprised! ................However on this page:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.asuscom.de/products/mb/fsb800.htm" target="_blank">http://www.asuscom.de/products/mb/fsb800.htm</a>
"However, if you want to upgrade to 800MHz FSB with a 533MHz CPU, then you
will have to manually overclock by adjusting BIOS settings. Change CPU
external frequency to 200MHz, but make sure there is unlock on frequency
multiple. For 2.4GHz CPU, please adjust CPU frequency multiple from x18 to
x12 and maintain CPU speed at the original setting."
There is not really a great deal of scope for mis-reading and/or
mis-understanding the statement that you can adjust the settings on a 533
P4 to get it to run at 800Mhz.
......so what are they playing at?

Still you managed to both misread and misunderstand it.
> .....so what are they playing at?
Read, once more, the sentence you quoted stating "Change CPU external
frequency to 200MHz, but make sure there is unlock on frequency multiple."
Did you follow the instructions, and made sure you have a CPU where "there
is unlock on frequency multiple", i.e. an ES CPU? How did you make sure?
Oh, you didn't, eh? So you have an unlockable consumer CPU? Thought so.
Move along, and try to understand what you read the next time.

In this case, it wasn't the instructions provided with the motherboard, but
something that was on a European ASUS site. For all I know, this specific
part of the documentation might have been meant for hardware manufacturers
or one of the few big reviewers that DO have access to ES CPUs. And they
don't specify anything WRONG -- just something that applies to very few
people. At least it tells you to make sure that you can unlock the CPU
multiplier on your CPU, and thus there shouldn't be any confusion.
On the other hand, one would presume that people who for specific reasons
receive unlocked CPUs from Intel would figure out how to do this without
instructions...
Regards,

It's on the U.S. site too.

The 'confusion' is in implying it's a practical option when it isn't.

I have run my P4PE with a 2.6c processor. It sets the processor core speed at
200mhz with a multiplier of 13. The only drawback is you can't overclock. The
core speed is locked at 200mhz. Other than that it runs great. >> Stay informed about: P4PE @ 800MHz FSB??? |
