more performance to work better with VISTA, always if it is support.

Hello Fabrizio:
The Asus P4PE has a Intel 845PE chipset in it. It was originally limited to
400 or 533 MHz FSB CPUs. They later came out with a BIOS update that would
allow you to upgrade the CPU to a 3.0 or 3.2 GHz Northwood (512 KB L2 cache
& 800 MHz FSB) if you also upgraded the RAM to PC3200 (400 MHz). These are
only modest impovements over your 2.53 .
Please make sure that you DO NOT attempt to install the Prescott model CPU
(1 MB L2 cache). Please also take note that your chipset is limited to
reading 4 memory sides or two dual sided DIMMs. You can not utilize the 3rd
DIMM slot if the first two are occupied with dual sided memory. Maximum is 2
GB total.
Good luck,
Craig

Buona fortuna, Craig

There are no longer any Intel CPU's manufactured that would work in that
older motherboard. You may be able to find an old P4 3.06 GHz 533 FSB on
eBay or somewhere, but that is about your only choice. I know this because
I used to own a P4PE motherboard, and I liked it very much when I was using
the CPU I just mentioned.

Hello, I bought this CPU upgrade (ebay auction item 280202015419 -
3.2GHz SL7DU HT 1MB 533MHz) for my P4PE, but when I power up, it emits
the high frequency beeps. The P4PE manual says: "CPU Overheated;
System running at lower frequency".
Do I need to change any jumper settings on my mbo? Do I need to
upgrade my memory to PC3200?
Thanks!

There are no 1MB cache processors listed here. That would be a Prescott, and a
Prescott really shouldn't POST in a P4PE. (A Prescott is supposed to have
a pin on the bottom, that can detect that the P4PE is the wrong kind
of motherboard.)
http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=p4pe
The second interesting thing, is the title on this page.
"Mobile Intel Pentium 4 Processors - M 3.20 GHz"
http://processorfinder.intel.com/Details.aspx?sSpec=SL7DU
It looks like something you'd stick in a laptop. Which is why the banner
over the picture of the processor, on the Ebay auction, says "laptop aid".
http://i1.ebayimg.com/03/i/000/d6/0e/11bd_1.JPG
I don't know what to tell you now. Really, the processor should not
have been able to "beep". It should have been completely silent. So
that must mean a Mobile Prescott doesn't have the sensing capability,
OR the previous owner broke that pin off.
Would a BIOS change do anything ? I haven't a clue. You're "off the
charts" at the moment
I tried a search, and it is possible to use a Mobile Prescott in
a desktop board. One hardware combination worked, if Hyperthreading
was disabled on the motherboard, before swapping the processor. So
you could give that a try if you want.

OMG, I'm such an amateur. I looked at P4PE compatible CPUs on the
support page, saw that Pentium 4 3.2 GHz was supported, so I simply
looked for a Socket 478 CPU.
Oh well, live and learn. Thanks! >> Stay informed about: P4PE |

It's a bit tricky, and the charts never have enough detail for
my liking. For example, they could use the descriptive terms
like Prescott, Northwood, Willemette, as a further adjective.
Because some sites use those terms in the adverts, and they're
easier to understand.
Still, I like your test results. It means the processor was
able to execute some BIOS code, but I'm guessing the BIOS
didn't like all the info given to it by the processor.
It is possible, if you picked up a different motherboard,
or tried that HyperThreading experiment, you might get a
bit further. Most of the time, if people use a Prescott
in an older board (Celeron D was another example, that has
the sense pin on it), they're greeted by silence, and then
you're stuck.
To try the HyperThreading experiment, what you'd need to do
is install the old processor, and disable Hyperthreading. Then
shut down. Plug in the new processor, and give it a try.
No guarantees, of course, because you're doing some unique testing
Since it beeped, the processor probably wasn't damaged.
