I see where Tiger Direct has 2.8 GHz processors with a 400 MHz FSB for
$169.99. Will this work with the P4T-E? If so what BIOS do I need?
I am currently running a 2.0 A at 2.16 GHz with BIOS 1005 and figured
the upgrade if it allowed the same over clocking would give me a 3 GHz
machine without having to replace everything. This way I could afford
to wait until the next generation of motherboards and other parts comes
out before upgrading.

Curious. Can you find this unit in processorfinder.intel.com ?
The closest I can get is 2.8GHz/533. I also cannot find a good match
in the pricelist here:

Contact Tigerdirect and get a five character SSPEC or the product
code, like RK80532PE072512 (OEM order code for 2.8/533/512KB).
Maybe then you can verify just what exactly you are getting,
from processorfinder.intel.com.

I tried looking on Newegg and cannot find a matching product
either. The closest I could find is a Xeon 2.8/400/512KB in
socket 604.

If it is actually a Prescott 90nm processor, there is no way of
knowing whether the BIOS will understand or not. Some of the
P4C800/P4P800 boards don't understand Prescott without a BIOS
update.

The latest beta BIOS seem to be adding support for faster Celeron
processors. 1008.003 and 1008.004 are mentioned here:

I'd double check if that's a misprint before ordering. The last time I was
on the intel website, the fastest 400 Mhz processor was a 2.6. This works
fine with the P4T-E and the latest bios. I have not seen a 2.8 processor at
400 Mhz.

There is no P4 2.8GHz with a 400 MHz FSB, but there is a Celeron 2.8GHz
with a 400MHz FSB (and, in the future, there may be even faster Celerons
with the 400 MHz FSB). This is not formally approved for the p4t-e, but
it probably will work. I'd use the latest available BIOS.

[The Celeron and Pentium 4 are essentially the same chip except that the
Celeron has a smaller cache system.]

I have a p4t-e with a 2ghz and i've just bought a 3ghz and p4c800-e deluxe.
Reading you original post you seem to say that you are only going to upgrade
the cpu and wait until BTX comes out. If that is the case I wouldn't bother
getting the faster processor. You won't really notice the speed increase. I
upgraded my system but left my old geforce 3 in as I'm waiting for the
nvidia 6800 to come out and although it benches faster it doesn't really
feel much faster certainly not worth spending money on. My 2ghz used to max
out the geforce 3 so even games aren't faster with the 3ghz.
