Hi All,

A quick ping to see if anyone has any experience of the above
combination (i.e. Adaptec 3405 SAS/SATA RAID adapter and ASUS P5K
motherboard). Do they work well together, are there any issues?

I would be running Linux and Vista (and maybe Solaris (drivers
allowing)).

Best Regards,

Gary Whitehead.

May I ask what is the reason to use an adaptec while the mobo has RAID
support?

The MB only has so called 'fakeraid'/'hostraid' or whatever you want
to call it (i.e. really nothing more than a driver for the OS with
hints in the BIOS as how to execute the RAID operation - which is all
executed in the CPU). Also describing the board as having RAID is
going a little far, only the JMICRON SATA (one external E-SATA and one
internal SATA) is RAID enabled; I.e. there is only one internal drive
that can belong to a RAID array (!#@!) - my feeling is that ASUS's
marketing department have gone just a little too far here!

Take a look at what the Adaptec can do (in addition to being true
hardware RAID), its capabilities are close to having OS independent
LVM (Linux)/Dynamic discs (Windows), i.e. many separate redefinable
volumes (appearing as SCSI discs) with different RAID levels from one
RAID set - that capability I can use.

A few reasons, one I have used Adaptecs before when I had SCSI systems
and trust their kit. The second was from browsing the manuals for
both 3ware and Adaptec controllers - it appears that the Adaptec is
rather more flexible (multiple 'logical' discs with different RAID
levels on the same array), although this may just reflect the depth of
my scanning and the ease with which the information is available in
the docs. Last (but still important), the Adaptec has production
quality Vista drivers, the 3ware is still in beta.

A quick reply to my own post - in case anyone is looking for an answer
to the same question.

The Adaptec works fine with the p5k - the only point to be aware of is
that it in effect uses 2 pcie slots, the MB has a 4x/1x slot + a 1x
slot in addition to the 16x slot used for the video card. The 1x slot
is disabled if the 4x/1x slot is used in 4x mode (which is correct for
the Adaptec card).

The card is as flexible as it promises - the only downside is that it
adds a lot of time to the boot process as it boots itself up.

I have a PK5C w/ the LSI MegaRAID SATA 150-4 controller. Works great
in Windows XP & CentOS. The one problem I have w/ it (as mentioned
above) is during boot, it waits for ~ 20 seconds after initializing.
Does anyone know of a keystroke that shortens this? BTW, the normal
ones (CTRL-C, CTRL-X, etc.) don't work.

Thanks
