Just setting up an upgrade motherboard (Asus P5K Premium Intel 35-Socket
775) which requires me to move away from IDE to SATA. There is now only
ONE IDE socket on the new board which I'm leaving for the CD/DVD's, and
changing over completely to SATA HD's. I have a Ghost image of the old
bootable HD which I was hoping to clone onto the new SATA drive via
either Firewire or USB. Unfortunately Ghost (2003) cannot "see" the SATA
drive.

Reading between the lines in the ASUS forum I am wondering if this may
be something to do with the way the ASUS bios is set up.

Needless to say I haven't even made it through to windows yet (XP sp2)
and I am booting to PC Dos with Ghost created floppy.

Be grateful for any ideas any onemay have.

Jon

Can any anyone help me please?
Many thanks.
Jon

Recall something about Ghost 2003 not supporting Sata drives natively - this
is a function of one of the LiveUpdates apparently.

I think you're wasting your time. I gave up on my copy of Ghost '03 when I
went SATA. Try to do a backup with a SATA boot drive and Ghost '03 and
you're shafted. You have to pull the HDD and mess about in another machine
as it won't boot Ghost *or* Windows.

If either of the HDDs are Seagate or Maxtor then download and use Seagate
DiskWizard. It's a cut-down version of Acronis TrueImage and it works
wonderfully. Otherwise I'd suggest getting Acronis TrueImage Home 11, it's a
brilliant programme.

I have ghost 2003 and sata drives and have no problem with backups.

I do not have any problems either using Ghost 3000 on Sata and IDE drives in
the same computer.
Make sure Sata drives are turned on in BIOS.

If you are using an automated ghost restore disc, on some computers I
have to copy the ghost.exe to the ghost folder and point the command
line to run the program from there instead of from the boot disc.
Otherwise ghost starts but hangs for some reason.
Running the executable from the folder on the hard drive loads it faster
anyway.
I use ghost manually from a boot cd on my own machines and have never
had any problems with Sata.

Ghost 2003 build .793 with -FNI switch works FINE with SATA/IDE drives!

The problem is that you probably don't have the latest build, .793 on
your ghost 2003. If you go to liveupdate it will tell you you are all
up to date, however, even with version .775 and .778 WHICH DO NOT
SUPPORT SATA!

Most everyone seems to be under the impression that this patch was
'discontinued' by symantec or no longer available.

After doing some digging I realized that the patch WAS available if you
followed symantec's instructions to access their ARCHIVED Liveupdate
server!

Here's Symantec's instructions on how to do this, follow them exactly
and you should get the update. Just make sure all of your ghost
services are killed in task manager before the update or it won't take
hold and you'll have to run it again.

'How to obtain the programs updates that are archived on Symantec
LiveUpdate server' (http://tinyurl.com/2dfupa)

Just use the ghost.exe -fni switch when actually loading ghost from
disk to maximize the sata disk performance.

Enjoy! Hope this helps, woulda saved me hours if it had previously been
posted somewhere.
