Hi... confused here.... I'm building a new Pc with the above mobo as the
backbone. I was going to put an E6600 CPU in it. Running XP Pro.... as
Vista is poop.

Anyhoo... suddenly got me thinking about 64-bit in general i.e. 64-bit XP,
and a 64-bit processor? But then do I need 64-bit memory. The way I was
thinking was based on the memory restriction on 32-bit XP i.e. 4GB max.

Am I thinking right? Can I go to 64-bit with the mobo? Is it worth it?
Running XP 64-bit... with a possible requirement for diff. memory? I would
like to run more than 4GB.

Hope that all made sense.

You need a 64 bit OS to access more than 4 GB RAM (realistically, a 32
bit OS will access ~ 3 GB RAM). The CPU and memory is 64 bit (128 bit
memory with dual channel).

XP 64 bit is a good choice, IF you can find 64 bit drivers for whatever
else you may have in the system (sound card, video card, whatever).

Instead of the E6600, you can get a E8400 Wolfdale core CPU that runs on
less power, has more L2 cache and is virtually the same price).
The E8400 has 45nm architecture, as opposed to 65nm for the E6600. This
is a case where smaller is better and even more overclockable than the
E6600.

All DDR2 memory is 64-bit capable. Your motherboard is 64-bit capable.
But, you may have some trouble finding stable 64-bit drivers for your
various computer components.

What do you do on your computer that you think will benefit from >3GB?
I would give serious thought to Vista 64 if considering going to 64 bit OS.
If you were writing 64 bit drivers, which OS would you be writing for?

Thanks all,

The PC is going to be used primarily for gaming, plus some map design for
game mods. So I guess 64-bit would be overkill, plus the driver issues too
from the sounds of it.

Think Ill stick to 32-bit for now Smile But thanks for your feedback and the
suggestion of the Wolfdale processor.
