PC Suddenly Shuts Off

Post subject: PC Suddenly Shuts Off

IBM ThinkPad R40

After 4 years w/o problem...this suddenly happens:
With power plugged in, it starts up then after a few seconds,
suddenly shuts off. --- even thou the battery is good.

what could possiblely be the problem(s) ?

An overheated processor should shut the thing off as well.
When is the last time it was cleaned inside ?
Does the processor fan run faster than normal ?

CRT shuts off - I have a geforce 6150 (integrated video) and a ViewSonice 17 crt screen. On start up the monitor shuts off and on (quickly) and then does it again, once Windows (XP SP2) loads. What's with the off and on? Anyone heard of this.
