I just replaced a bad motherboard with a PCChips M848A v5. Now Windows
will not boot. CD-Rom & floppy boot Ok & and access files on the HDs
Ok. I installed WinXP on one drive I didn't care about to test the HD &
It booted fine - I couldn't use it 'cause I already activated on a diff
computer and I have irreplacable apps on the original HD.. I re-imaged
the drive I want (with a recent backup) but still just resets the
computer when at the "Start Windows Normally...etc" screen.
Is this one of those Microsoft "Gotcha...Tuff Sh..." situations or is
there a remedy?

Do a repair install. Make sure Norton Go-back is NOT active.

If you downloaded and installed SP1/SP2 to original Windows XP, you have to
use the original CD to do the repair. You can then install SP2 which
includes SP1. You may have to call to reactivate Windows XP if it does not
do so automatically over the Internet. Then install the subsequent updates.

Hey
When you get it booted up and running would you let me know if it has S3
Suspend to ram working on this board?
I was going to buy it if it does. I can't seem to get a definite answer from
anybody. THANKS

Thanks Wes & Earl for advice,
Actually, I realized that I made a fundamental error (brain freeze) in
the first place. I was approaching this computer as an OEM model w/out
original disk[s]. (Unfortunately, I have a few 'orphaned OEMs' to
babysit here.) So I was hoping to reactivate once I was up & running w/
new hardware. Then I realized (Duh) that this computer was built by a
departed co-worker. He apparently installed a beta-WinXP & left behind
a copy on CD. Since I don't trust this XP copy, my original problem is
moot. I need to recommend purchase of a new WinXP and continue from
there.

Thanks again for your help - If nothing else, it helped jar my myopic
assumption loose

Alton,
BIOS "Power Management Setup > ACPI Standby State" ONLY has "S1" option
- (seems odd for a late-model MB)

BTW - I was wondering if you had tried web (Google) search for "BIOS
specs". I've done a little but haven't found anything comprehensive. I
going to start w/ BIOS MFG next time...

Thank you
No I didn't search but I downloaded the manual and saw only S1. I couldn't
believe they would make a new board without suspend to ram. BUT I'm trying
to replace an ECS/PC Chips KT600 that I bought a couple of years ago. I
didn't check and it didn't have it ether. I look on EBay and 200FSB boards
are going for 60 to 80 bucks because you can't buy a new one. So I ended up
buying a 754 Biostar refurbished with a 3200+ Athlon 64 and a good cooler
for $87 so I could reuse my PC400 memory and Geforce 6600 APG card. I'll put
my 2500 Barton and board on EBay.
It don't pay to stay socket A. LOL
