My computer is shutting down on it's own. It started when I had taken
the cpu cooler off to clean it because it was plugged with dust. When
I put it back on the computer shuts down soon after it starts. I went
into the bios and it says the temp is 177 degrees. One time after I
started it after it had been sitting for an hour it read 204. I put
fresh heat sink compound on the cpu. What might cause it to read so
high. Where is the temp sensor. Is it in the cpu or the MB. Any
ideas how to keep this computer from shutting down.

Thanks,
Paul

Remove the heatsink again. Study the pattern left in the thermal
grease. Is the heatsink fully squashing the paste ? Is paste
spread all the way out to the edges ? Also, check that the
heatsink is sitting flat. This is one reason, if at all possible,
I try to fit the heatsink while the motherboard is outside the
case. That allows visual inspection, to see whether the heatsink
is flush with the processor or not. On one old motherboard, my
heatsink actually was resting on the metal lever arm that
operates the ZIF socket.

Paul
