Post subject: No POST messages on DVI monitor using ATI X1950 card
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>hardware>video (more info?)

I have a problem where my system works perfectly apart from the short
time during boot up when it's supposed to be showing POST messages.
During this time my monitor is blank, once Windows kicks in, however,
the picture returns. The monitor is a targa Visionary 19-3 connected
via its DVI port.

The problem seems to be that the card starts up in a non-standard
resolution of 640x350@70Hz instead of the 640x480@60Hz in the DVI
specs for the "Low Pixel Support" format. (At least that's what an
analog monitor attached to the card reports)

A bit of research shows that this is a known problem with ATI chipset
based cards and has been around for several years over several
chipsets. (I've come across posts from 2003 describing exactly the
same problem with older ATI cards).

Support requests to sapphire initially had me contacting ATI who
bounced me straight back to Sapphire as it was "a BIOS Issue" and was
manufacturer specific. Referring back to Sapphire I was told that they
were aware of the problem but could not duplicate it with the limited
number of monitors they'd tried. Furthermore they said that they had
passed the problem "many times" to ATI but with "no conclusion".

Since this failure to conform to the DVI spec is almost certainly down
to a flaw in the base template BIOS supplied to OEMs by ATI(AMD) it is
probably common to all cards using their recent chipsets.

Clearly, after four years some progress must have been made.

Does anyone know if the problem has been resolved by any OEM or, or
possibly has had some success getting a fix out of ATI (AMD)?
