Archived from groups: alt>comp>hardware>pc-homebuilt (more info?)

In advance thank you for the help. I love these forums.

(cliche') I friend called me last night while I was at work and his
world is falling apart his pc started to have issues. He started to
smell an electical odor and after sniffing through the house he thinks
it came from his pc. He felt the case and noticed it was really hot. (I
told him many many times he needed more cooling) He took the pc apart
and noticed the PSU fan was not blowing. He denies any issues with the
pc prior to this moment. he stated he turned off his game and shut down
the pc and then gave it a good cleaning and went and bought a new 500W
PSU. this machine is over 4 years old with some recent upgrades. from
memory without the pc in hand to look at the specs are below.

The issue is after the new PSU was installed the main IDE HDD works
fine but the SATA 300GB HDD when the PSU is plugged in the pc will start
for about 5 seconds and shut off. If you unplug the sata seagate hdd the
pc will boot and start just fine. The SATA HDD is just a storage drive.
I wanted to get some preliminary info prior to getting my hands on the
machine to troubleshoot some things. I promise once I get it taken apart
I will get some better specs. Again thank you all for some input.

(from the top of my head)

60Gb IDE HDD 7200rpm (unk make)
AMD 64bit 754
Chaintech MK8T890
2GB of ram
Seagate baracuda 300gb SATA
Nvidia 256MB PCIe card

When you say "unplugged" I assume you mean power to the SATA HD? If so
then you must determine if the HD or the new PSU is causing the problem.
Try another SATA HD or try another PSU and or get a PSU tester. I use
this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16899705003

A tester does not guarantee that the PSU is good but it's better than
guessing.

Cheap PSU's do that......not enough power at start to spin everything up.

Could be that the drive croaked due to a bad psu, could also be that
the supposed good new psu is a piece of junk. Try the drive in a
known working system.

Hey thanks for all the good advise!

I plugged in a different PSU that I use to test new boards and builds.
I started the pc in the normal configuration with all the hardware
plugged in and same problem. I disconnected all the "new" cooling
devises and the DVD and the main HDD. Hit the power button and the SATA
drive shot flames and smoke. I think it is time for a new storage
device. thanks again for the help.

It is possible that connection could have been damaged when the board
was overheated.
