My PC is connected to the web through a ZyXEL Prestige DSL modem.

Under Network Connections it is set to obtain IP AND dns addresses
automatically.

If I type "www.google.com" into IE , it navigates there OK as with all
other named addresses.

If I go to START>RUN >CMD > ipconfig , then type "ping
www.google.com" this times out .

Is this OK ?

The reason I ask this is that I am trying to setup a Linksys Wireless
Broadband Router in which , at one point in the setup process , it
suggests that I check the Web connection by typing " www.yahoo.com" at
the ipconfig in order to get a return ( this also times out )

Should work but not a good test.

U may have some firewalling enable to block a ping from going out, OR
Goggle has ping response disabled, and both would be normal if u know
they are there.

Something's wrong with your setup.

What does IPCONFIG /ALL says?

Go to Linksys's config menus. what is your WAN IP, MASK, DNS? (info
obtained from ISP via Linksys).

Thanks for the reply - I have ZA (free version running - perhaps I
should try it with that turned off )

Well , as you might imagine , it says quite a lot ! - ( I was trying
for some quick "fixes " - (aren't we all !) - so I didn't include that
- perhaps I should have . its just that I was surprised when the CD ,
on checking my Web connection , should have come up with the message
that there WAS NO connection when there was , in fact , one !

I'm beginning to wonder whether ther is something wrong with the
router ?

On the subject of the "ping anomalies" this different reaction to a
ping in which the numeric identity of a site is entered and where the
name of the same site is entered is , I take it , not a normal result
?

Is that a correct assumption ?

I'll reply to that question in another post as I have to set all that
up again - thanks for the replies and the interest .

I've got this problem sorted out now - it was a problem with the
interaction between my DSL modem and the Linksys router wwhich is now
working OK.

Thanks for the replies.
