I notice that when I boot into Win98SE, the post code LEDs stay at FF, but
when I boot into WinXP Pro it drops from FF to 20, which of course is not in
the AI7 manual. What is this code, and should I be worrying about it?

I would say that if it booted to a normal OS condition, that the POST code
is not a concern. I *really* wish that Abit would publish ALL of the
possible POST codes, though. what good is the readout if all of the codes
are not published?!

Yes, very frustrating. I've got to assume it's something about XP, as it
never happens with Win98.

Mine is as well. After running for a bit, doing on-line stuff, do you find
that the post code sometimes goes from 20 to 48?

HMmmmm ....

Since the 'supposedly' =last/final= BIOS_driven post_code is 'FF' ,
'one' mite suppose that =any= 'following' post_codes of '20' & '48'
are ?possibly? an un_intended "artifact" from an (errant) piece
of OS code ...

"Schmutz" from XP , but not from W98 ????
Quite possible, highly probable ... given the complexity of the OSs
involved.

As to potential 'harm' ...
who knows, its anyone's guess.

Above ...
Dunno , really ... just guessing.

............................................................
REF: AWARD Software International, Inc.
.. BIOS CMOS Setup Utility Version 4.51G / PG,
.. Documentation Revision 1.2
.. ( sorry, dont have the URL )

The above 'ref' has no mention of any hex post_codes = '20' or '48' ...

Most 'typically' ,
the generation of hex codes followed an ever increasing code "value" ...
never reverted to a lessor hex "value" ...
and ended the bios_driven "post phase" with the 'provebial' "FF"
beastie.

I dont have, & never tried to follow, the later versions of
Award/Phoenix
bios progress 'code' designations ... 5.nn & 6.nn .

............................................................

Mite be interesting if some *nix "type" could report his/her findings
along this line ... same mobo.

Qed.

PS- Sounds like a good 'project' for Homie now that hes snow_bound and
.. flockus-abstentia ...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Being a chicken-shit, nit_picking, worry wart ...
Me?
I'd say "dunno, suck it & see ... but be watchful".

A 'fair' <?> & request ...

Is it possible that Abit's "bash",
of the Award supplied 'prototype' BIOS code,
mite yield a few "trade" secret gimmicks
via publication of Abit's use of the bios post_codes ???

All in all ,
a most interesting thread.

Qed.

PS- I got to wondering ...
.. does Homie put his sheepies on snow shoes ...
.. or ,
.. does he carry a snow shovel such that he can "work" at thier level
??
..
.. Does Homie "shoe", or "shovel" , or "what" ??
..
.. Poor Homie.

PPS- Every 'cloud' has a silver lining ...
.. Homie's un_kempt grass is no longer subject to criticism.
..
.. TomG's VW luxury-edition, sex-van can no longer be 'seen' ... snow
covered.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

It turns out you are on the money, Qed. I called Abit today and spoke to one
of the techs. He said that once you successfully reach FF, it won't matter
what shows up after that. While he did not say that the 20 and 48 codes I
see may be related to XP "shmutz", he did say that it does not reflect on
any sort of motherboard hardware POST reporting capability.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I'd fully agree its not Abit's or Award's problem ...
BUT ...
if I were doing payroll, market investement , et al , DoD "stuff" ...
I'd sure find an =alternate= way to double check my ?results? for
a time to come ...

It still leaves the <?> of errant
AMD/Intel op-codes ( bummer micro code ) ,
and/or
M$ OS code "features" ...

I'd hate to tell you of the 'funnies' I turned up in some of the
Big Boo early 360s and Data Cells ...
and, some of the un_documented, un_blocked 360 "op-codes" that
were hard to fathom ... find out what( if anything ) that "they" did.
"Same" with HP , NCR & others too ... none with DG & DEC happily .
Oh Well ... it bought my "lunch" anyway.

BTW ... that was =good=, =aggressive= follow-up ...
my sincere compliments ... well done, to be sure.

Be well,

Thank you; I just don't like being left with ambuguities. I'm actually older
than I sound <g>. I remember the days of DEC VAX-11/780 and the earlier IBM
370's (there were still a few of those around at my college when I was
there!). Yes, those were the good old days!<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
