Post subject: Power On and Restart issue with 8KHA+
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>epox (more info?)

Hello,

I'm running WinXP Pro with a 2400+ and 1Gb of 2100 ram. I upgraded hard drives, so I did a
fresh install of WinXP. Now my PC will not start when the power button is pushed. The power
does come on (CPU fan spins up, hard drives power up, CD-drives power up, etc.), but that's
it. I usually hear the sound of the monitor coming on, but nothing happens until I push the reset
button. Sometimes I have to hit the reset a couple of times before it will actually boot.

The PC will also not reboot when selecting Restart from the Start button menu. The PC will not
reboot when loading software that requires a system restart (Norton Anti-Virus, GeForce Drivers,
Microsoft updates, etc.). I have to hit the reset to get it to reboot.

There was no problem before I upgraded the drive so I put the original drive back in, and now it
will not boot at power on either. This was without changing any settings, or hardware. I reformatted
the drive and reinstalled WinXP Pro on it, and still nothing. I reformatted and installed Win98SE,
which requires a couple of restarts during installation, and the PC would just hang. Hit the reset and
installation would continue from where it left off. The PC will not Restart from the Start button menu in
Win98 either. ARRRRGGGHHHHHH!

I cleared the bios and started over from scratch, but still nothing.

Here's the chronology:

1. PC works fine (boots up at Power On and Restarts from Start menu).

2. Remove original drive, install new drive, install WinXP Pro.

3. PC will not boot at Power On or Restart from Start menu or software installations.

4. Remove new drive, reinstall original drive.

5. PC will not boot at Power On or Restart from Start menu or software installations.

6. Reformat original drive, install Win98SE.

7. PC will not boot at Power On or Restart from Start menu or software installations

8. Clear bios, go through ALL settings, and change as necessary.

9. Remove original drive, reinstall new drive, format new drive, reinstall WinXP Pro.

10. PC will not boot at Power On or Restart from Start menu or software installations

11. Ask for help...

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Mike D.

I had a similar issue with an 8k3a. No rhyme nor reason as to when the
problem would occur.
Threw in a new, bigger power supply and have had no problem since.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

the mobo is not stable/enough in the power cycle-on. i got a epox 8k3a+ with
a post code port, it don't say anything when the problem occour (black)

ps i use a foot switch to compleatly power-off my computer.

It is probably the PSU not having sufficient grunt to get everything going
at 'Power On' or 'Reset'. But just so you don't get caught out, have a
look at the larger electrolytic capacitors on the m/board and look for
domed tops (indicates internal pressure), capacitors leaning over a little
(because the pressure is pushing the rubber bung out of the case base),
or dark gungy stuff that has leaked onto the pcb. This latter stuff is
caustic
so wash your hands if you touch it!

If any of these conditions apply you might consider replacing the m/board.
