Post subject: Problem with Actiontec wireless Cable/DSL Router and Earthlink DSL
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>hardware>networking (more info?)

I am trying to set up a simple wireless connection for my laptop, an
HP Pavilion with a US Robotics Wireless Access PC card. I have an
Actiontec wireless Cable/DSL router with all the firmware upgraded to
the latest version. As of two days ago, I was able to connect my
computer to a wireless network, but I had to unplug the router and DSL
box for a brief period. When I plugged them back in, the wireless
connection no longer functioned. I went back in and made sure that
all the necessary info was in the router (default address of
192.168.0.1), including the username and password that I also had to
input into the DSL box to get it to work. The DSL modem's default
address is different from the router (172.16.xx.xx). The connection
functions perfectly when I run an ethernet cable directly from the DSL
modem to the computer, but when I try to run the DSL through the
router, I can't connect. I have a full wireless signal into the PC
card, but I cannot recieve data. When I go into the router
configuration utility, it gives me the option to check the current
status, and it says the WAN is disconnected. Two days ago, when the
wireless network was functioning, I initially got it to start working
by clicking on the "Connect" button, the proper DNS numbers etc...all
popped up, and I had Internet. Now, however, when I try to click on
the "Connect" button, it hangs indefinitely, saying only
"Connecting..." and only the send light of the networking icon
flickers...no recieve. I have reset the modem and the router several
times and re-input all my info, to no avail.

I'd appreciate any help anyone could provide, and I would be happy to
answer any more detailed questions that might help you troubleshoot
this problem. I am running WinXP Home, and the TCP/IP is configured
to automatically obtain IPs. On one other note...my computer had to
recover from some sort of registry error recently (in the same time
period as when I was having my problems), but it used a backup
registry and now seems to be working fine...don't know if that would
be a problem or not.

Thanks in advance
Stuart Albert

This may sound a bit lame, but can you change the Ethernet cable running
between the router and the DSL modem. It almost appears like you have a bad
cable.

OK, I actually got this problem fixed, though it wasn't the Ethernet
cable that was causing the problem. Apparently I was setting the
router to get the IP addresses through PPPooE instead of DHCP.
Everything works fine now, but I have *no* idea what the difference is
between PPPoE and DHCP. And I could have *sworn* that the first time
I set up the router with this connection, it was over PPPoE. Can
anyone enlighten my ignorance and tell me why this is working now?

Thanks

PPPoE is Point to Point Protocol Over Ethernet. Usually PPP is over
a serial line, like a modem. It's just a way of encapsulating your
IP traffic. PPP negotiates (or can negotiate) pretty much
everything DHCP can, but DHCP is designed to do it with a full
network instead of just a point to point link.

Many broadband providers use (or did use, maybe they're changing)
PPPoE. It really doesn't make a big difference to the typical
customer. It is just a setup issue.
