Problem adding memory on S2720

Post subject: Problem adding memory on S2720
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>tyan (more info?)

We are trying to add 2 512 ECC memory to a S2720 i7500 board that
already has two sticks of 512 ECC memory installed. When the two new
sticks are added all we get are beeps and the machine will not post.

So we tried just the new sticks and all was fine but as soon as we
added the old ones we got just beeps again. So we tried 4 new sticks
and no go. All this memory came from Crucial and is all the same part
number. When tried in pairs it works fine but as soon as we try 4
sticks we get nothing but beeps.

Could this be bad memory slots on the board or would a BIOS update fix
this? The next two slots have never been used. Thanks.

Never really saw Crucial on the list of approved memory vendors for
that board. Have a look:
