Post subject: Problems after upgrading BIOS
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>soyo (more info?)

I flashed latest BIOS, being kvxa2ba8, to my SY-K7V DRAGON Plus.
Computer runs for 2 minutes or so and then crashes to blue info screen
with info such as: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA,
stop: 0x0000050 etc; stop: 0x0000008e etc; stop: 0x0000007f
(three different blue screens)

Any suggestions or can I, should I, go back to original BIOS kvxz2ba2
which I saved to disk when flash program asked. Do I use same
proceedure to reinstall old BIOS?

Did you unplug the system, then clear the CMOS using the jumper after
flashing the BIOS?

Also, have you double checked your BIOS settings to make sure they are
all as before? That error is often caused by over aggressive memory
settings.

Yes. Just flash it as before, only use the .bin file you saved at backup
for the flash.

I would ask a different question: What problem do you expect to solve with
the new BIOS? If none, and the new bios is less stable then the old one,
what is the point of getting the new bios.
Sometime new bios solve one problem but cause another one (compatibility
with video, memory, pci card...).

Yes, I unpluged sysytem and cleared CMOS. I have tweeked BIOS settings
to those I used under old Bios. Does it take a while to stabilize? Since
posting, I have been surfing the Web with no problems. But I just tried to
play C & C Generals and it closed with a runtime error; never had any
problems with C&C with old bios.

I have played FreeCell for awhile with no problems. Tried playing C&C
Generals
again and had blue screen crash with STOP 0x0000008E. Could my memory,
DDR PC2100, have a problem with new BIOS?

What are the listed changes in the new BIOS? Often times a new BIOS
brings new problems with it. That is why it is always advised that the
majority of people need not upgrade it unless it address a specific
problem that needs to be fix on your system. It could be that something
like one or more memory settings were not living up to their full
potential with the previous BIOS and now with the new one your memory is
getting pushed harder then it was before at the same settings. Or maybe
it has caused a compatibility problem with another device on your
system.

I never had much luck after the 5th bios update, computer would crash. I
went back to the 5th update and my computer runs stable.

I was hoping that the upgrade would allow use of a USB 2 PCI card that
I installed. It would not work under old BIOS and does not work with
new. I guess I'll try to flash back to old Bios.

Are you tried to reinstall OS over itself after upgrading BIOS?
It is recommended.

You should never have to reinstall the OS after upgrading the BIOS. All you
should do is clear CMOS with the computer unplugged and then reboot enter
the BIOS and set all parameters back as they were before the BIOS flash.
