Hi all,
Just bought an Athlon 64 3200+ Processor in a Box. It came with the
chip and a HSF but no mounting (retention frame) bracket. Is this
correct? I checked AMDs site but couldn't find a list of contents? The
directions in the box state to install a Retention Frame but don't say
if it supplied. I don't want to install it without some kind of
bracket.
FYI - My motherboard Abit KV8 Max3 didn't come with a bracket either.
Can anyone who bought this line of CPU in the box verify if these
things come with or without a retention frame.
TIA >> Stay informed about: Processor in a Box (PIB) |

I bought a boxed retail 64 3200+, it came with HSF,cpu and bottom mount
which attaches to motherboard.
Seems your box is missing parts.

Yep, my retail package came with the whole deal - chip, heatsink, and
retention brackets.
Did your retail package look opened? I know that those things are a pain in
the ass to get open so if yours was tampered with in any way is should have
either been managed beyond belief or cut with a razor.
In any case, you should contact AMD. I'm sure that they will send you the
retention bracket - although that may be little comfort as you stare at your
uncompleted computer system.

Ok so here's what happened. I bought the stuff - CPU, MB, memory,
etc, at Fry's Electronics. So for anyone knows Fry's, nuff said. Well
anyway, I went back and asked for a replacement CPU. What I got was
the same deal, no backplate or retention frame. So, I go to the
department Manager and he says that they don't come with them and that
the motherboard has them. I then tell him I'm going to my car to get
the MB and show him where in the manual it says these come with the
CPU and then will have to return it and the CPU since I can't use them
without the frame and backplate. I come back and while I'm waiting for
him I notice on the new CPU that it says right on the box....
This package contains: AMD Athlon 64 processor, Heatsink/fan,
retention frame, backplate, bezel sticker etc...
Why I didn't see this before I'll never know.
He comes back with a new motherboard and out of the blue this one has
the frame and backplate in it! I figure no need to press the issue
since I now have what I want. I do show him the CPU box and suggests
he notifies AMD that their packers leave something to be desired so
that others don't suffer my torment! I'm thinking that it did no good
but who knows!
So now it's onto building my new rig.
Thansk for the replies! >> Stay informed about: Processor in a Box (PIB) |

I am in the exact same situation. I have a FIC K8-800T motherboard
without retention frame and a bulk CPU. No luck. Swapped the bulk for
a retail, and now have a retail AMD64, 3000+ without retention frame,
even though the box says it is included.
I have e-mailed AMD, and requested them to send a frame ASAP. The
dealer did not have any in stock. They were also waiting for them >> Stay informed about: Processor in a Box (PIB) |

You didn't answer the question. Was the Athlon 64 plastic container sealed
or had it been opened and have one of Fry's infamous stickers on it saying
it was returned and carried full warranty. Never buy anything at Fry's which
has one of those stickers. Sometimes you have to look hard to find it but
they always put them on returned items.

While it may say it comes with it, it doesn't unless it's outside the
sealed plastic, which wouldn't make much sense. I just got one today and
there was no retention frame or backplate in it. The MB did however
already have one installed on it.

Mine, not bought at Fry's, was sealed tight as a drum. No retention
bracket or backplate came with it, even though it says it does. My guess
is they changed this proceedure for all MB makers to install one on the
board since it's a requirement for a cooler.

I saw two boxes and both looked like they were factory sealed plastic
containers. You know the kind you have to cut to open.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Processor in a Box (PIB) |

FWIW I saw a 3200+ at another store after this that did in fact have
the retention frame inside the package.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Processor in a Box (PIB) |

There's one easy way to clear it up, ask amd.
