Have a CAD system,

E6600
4 gig ram
running XP pro
with quadro 3500

been experiencing short freezes when trying to access the 'file' button in
both Solidworks and Autocad, most answers to this have been 'update the
graphics drivers' - other supposed fixes have been to add things to the
boot.ini file to make xp access more of the 4 gig, remove the paging file or
make it bigger..none of this fixed it. We thought shutting one monitor off
had done the trick, but no, the freezes came back soon after..got us
stumped. So lastly, we tried getting different drivers..having the latest
ones wasn't working so we got the ones before them

Now we get an "access is denied" error when installing them.

since the system has been set up on a Domain since it's purchase, we've
removed that (our last resort short of reinstalling windows) and only have
one user, the administrator on login..STILL the same problem occuring. Can't
install drivers! Access is denied !

Can anyone give us more suggestions ?

It sounds like the over 3gb windows bug?
remove 1gb either physically or by adding the following to boot.ini
/BURNMEMORY=1024

That's a very bad advice. Winxp can be made to use all of the 4GB by
using the /PAE switch but that makes Windows working with memory paging
which causes problems with all soft of drivers, including Nvidia drivers.

But you did remove the old gfx drivers before installing the new ones,
didn't you? Just installing new drivers without removing the old one
first is usually a very bad idea.

Boot up in safe mode and remove the old drivers. Then boot up normally
and install the latest quadro drivers that support your release of
Solidworks.

There is no "over 3GB windows bug". The reason why Windowsxp (like W2k
and Vista 32bit) can't see all of the 4GB is not a Windows problem. In
fact, the BIOS reserves a certain amount of memory for peripheral I/O
(i.e. gfx card, PCI cards etc). This reserved memory is located just
below the first 4GB of memory, it's size depends on the installed
hardware (usually around 256-700MB) and it's not available to any OS at
all (neither Windows, Linux or any other).

Newer systems support a new memory scheme which lifts the I/O address
space just above the installed physical memory to make all physical
memory available to the OS. But this requires not only a BIOS capable of
this, it also requires an OS that supports this new memory scheme.
Windowsxp Pro doesn't.

But other than that you loose some memory 4GB work just fine within
Windowsxp...
