Hi,
I own an Athlon x2 processor (4400+) and I'm currently running Windows
XP Pro sp1 x64.
My system specs are as follows:
Asus A8n32-SLI Deluxe MB
Asus EN7800GTX Nvidia 256 Mb video card
4 x 512 mb PC4000 OCZ Gold Rev. 2 Ram
250Gb WD 16 Mb SATA2 HDD
500 watt Antec Fanless power supply
creative x-Fi sound blaster Xtreme Music Sound card
plus all the usual peripherals etc..
I have a problem with my ssytem that is driving me insane and I wonder
if anyone here can help me.
My problem is as follows: My system randomly reboots itself with out
any warning. The reboot are sometimes completely random, as in I'm not
using any software and the computer is just idle and other times tne
reboots occur when I using anything from MS Office to playing a game.
I've scanned my system for viruses and found nothing, I've useed a
bunch of anti spyware programs and deleted anything those programs
found, but still the reboots occur. What's going on???? My ssytem is
relatively new and this is driving me crazy. I've intalled all the 64
bit compatible drivers I can find for my hardware and ther doesnt seem
to be a problem so what gives. Sometimes i get an error in windows
after the reboot that a serious problem occured and that it was
potentialy hardware related. Could it be, if anyone has a clue or
wants to help me out please go ahead. >> Stay informed about: Random reboots under Windows x64, HELP. |

1. Did You check memory modules ? www.memtest86.com
2. Turn off Automatically restart on system failure.
3. Put on SP2 !

No I did not check my memeory modules but I will. However throughout
all of these problem i've been having one thing sticks out more than
anything:
If my problrem is hardware related and something maybe defective or not
connected properly or whatever, how come I can run Linux (Fedora Core
4, since my system is dual boot) without any problems (my X-FI sound
card being an exception seeing as there is no support for it yet).
With this in mind I believe the problem is not hardware related...then
again...

Well I got another crash and this time i wrote down what I saw and this
is what the nice blue screen of death told me:
SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION
STOP: 0x0000003B (0x00000000C0000005, 0xFFFFF97FFF4B5A49,
xFFFFFA0FBAAE5F90,
0x0000000000000000)
atkDisp.dll - address FFFFF97FFF4B5A49 at FFFFF97FFF484000 Date stamp
43ab63ac
This error occured when i tried to open a video file in Winamp. This
kind of crash also occurs "sometimes" when I try to play videos in
Windows Media Player.

Did you turn off "Automatically Restart" in System as GGS suggested?
(System Properties/Advanced/Startup and Recovery/Settings) If you
didn't do that, then it's possible that you're missing BSOD error
messages that might give you a clue.
Also, what are you seeing in the System log (Start/Run "eventvwr.msc"
and read the messages under System marked by the yellow exclamation
points and red X's)?
The problem certainly did sound hardware-related, but I'd have to
agree with you that your ability to run Linux without problems casts
doubt on that. It's just that it's difficult to imagine a software or
driver problem that would cause the system to reboot when idle. Hmmmm.

Maybe Asus SmartDoctor is running in Windows but not in
Linux ? It could be one of those "add-on" features that
Asus ships, over and above the Nvidia written software,
that is crashing out. You know how fine some of that
Asus written stuff is...

Yup, yup and yup, did all that. The nice blue screen of death gave me
some nice messages, seems every tme it crashes some new file crops up
as the culprit. Everything from system level files for managing ATA
drives, to display driver files for my nvidia 7800gtx...and im using
stock drivers from the nvidia site too. Hmmm...the ATA .sys files are
from the Asus site, supposedly 64 bit, but my trust level in them isnt
100%, kinda buggy from my opinion. I didn't install smart doctor at
first but since i did i did not notice a difference. with or wothout
it. >> Stay informed about: Random reboots under Windows x64, HELP. |

hi all
i am also having extrem difficulties with winx64..
i get the 0x0000007E error alot, have no clue what it means..
System:
AMD-FX60
Asus A8N-32 SLI Deluxe
Stripping Raid on Nvidia SoftRaid
7800GTX 512MB
Corsair Twinx024-4400 @2.9V
(Audigy 2 ZS Pro, not added yet because of instablity issues with
whole system and add on cards dont realy help to narrow down the
solution)
i also have increased Vcore settings to 2.9 volt, tried to turn off
most off the asus fancy overclocking stuff, enabled the vcore
overvoltage allowance on all instances.
the system has been very unreliable since the install (even crashed
during install)
ohh.. and just for everbodies information, if you have a 7800GTX512
WinX64 wont display s***, you have to enable VGA mode via F8, then
install the nvidia drivers and then, if you are lucky, you will see
something ;-)
since turning up vcores, the system is better, but keeps crashing...
i have turned off one LAN connection, that also seemed to help.
any other ideas, system is still pretty empty, only office installed
cheers

Well everyone, I've had it, i gave up a long time. Too ad. I did
notice am observable performance increase using win x64 but the reality
is that the OS and the drivers developed for it so far are teerrible.
It's a broken system. IT has to be. No OS that crashes this much is
"just buggy". I'll wait for Vista to come out. >> Stay informed about: Random reboots under Windows x64, HELP. |

Hi bigred!
Wu, probably fast.
1. Is the XP 64bit Edition not made for the 'Itanium'!?
2. Try to disable all power-saving methods.
3. Plain install (choosing standard-PC at setup - F5) can help to avoid
any ACPI (power-saving methods) Troubles. Though, it is hard to get
such a hardware to work in standard-mode - I would say (Too much
onboard-devices).
4. Is Linux not working better with 64bit AMD? So far I heard is only
the 32bit XP stable.... you will not miss much of the 64bit power when
using the 32bit version. Itīs still double fast (rsponse) as a
compareable 32bit System.
5. hmmmm, 500W could be too less. I remember GfX-Card with a
power-consumption of 340W. I think it was a Geforce6800Ultra. So I
don't know about your things. Just look at the technical specs and sum
its Wattage. CPU, HD's, CD-RW etc., GfX, Mainboard, RAM and more.
6. You could also measure the ingoing power directly, before the
AC-Adaptor, by measuring the AC power. Seriel please
So you know at once how much is needed and use the voltage as you have
it for calculating.
P=U*I WATT=Voltage*Power (you can also measure the AC voltage for
precise calculation)

Hi, thanks for the adice.
You may be right. Linux (64 bit version, fedora core 5) works
beautifully on my system. No crashes or hang ups or anything. Windows
x64 & 32 bit both crash on me and reboot randomly. However after
trying everything i could think of i finally reinstalled win 32 bit and
then did something odd. Since the crash reports always returned news
that it was a video driver or device failure i turned on the PEG
overclock to Faster rather than AUTO...reboot & voila no more
crashes....played games for many hours, what a joy and no
problems...then switch PEG to NORMAL...still good....never set to AUTO
again...no way...i still get some random reboots but not like before,
almost all gone...still not sure why, maybe memory, maybe power supply
not giving enough juice...i still think my memory is not fully
compatible or 100% correct though, PRIME95 fails to contuct teh torute
tests...they report a hardware failure when i test the memory.
otherwise my ssytem is very stable. >> Stay informed about: Random reboots under Windows x64, HELP. |
