I have a BTC CD-RW burner, when I tried to flash the firmware the flash
program hung up, so the drive is now only useful as a paperweight

Anyway it was giving lots of problems with CD-RW disks, now what should I
replace it with? I have a choice of Sony, Asus or Lite-on.

You can resurrect *some* DVD/CD-roms with a programme called MTKFlash
(use from dos bootdisk). It will only work with drives that use the
MediaTek chipset. Check CDFreaks website for supported drives, info and
instructions.
