Post subject: S2460 Won't Boot to BIOS
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>tyan (more info?)

I just "upgraded" my S2460 to two MP 2400+ processors. It was mostly an
experiment to see if it would work. If not, I was going to upgrade to a
760MPX board. After the install, it booted just fine. It ran stably for
nearly a week.

Last Sunday I decided to reboot the system to free up what resources I had
used in the previous week. I planned to do some video editing.

The system rebooted, got to Windows and did one of its infamous random
reboots. It continued to do this through a few reboots. I decided to let it
rest until the next day when I would try again.

I powered the system up, the drives all began to spin up as normal. However,
nothing came on the monitor. There were no beep errors, nothing. Even the
keyboard light failed to come on.

I tried turning it on a few times, nothing. Same thing. As I've been busy
throughout the week, I let it sit for a while.

A little while ago I began looking at it. I took it apart and looked it
over. All the parts seem to work fine, I didn't check all of the cards but
the drives were good. There was no power connector burn-in. I ran the system
in its bare state and nothing happened as before.

The board is probably salvagable. I guess there could be some sort of BIOS
damage. I'll probably get a new BIOS and revert the system back to its
original configuration. I'll try to run it like that. I'll buy a newer,
better board for the MP 2400 processors.

The configuration is:

1.25 GB Crucial RAM
ATI AiW 9700
Enermax 430 Watt Hard Drive
Creative Audigy 2 Platinum Sound Card
120 GB Western Digital Special Edition Hard Drive
Maxtor 120 GB Hard Drive
Maxtor 60 GB Hard Drive
Maxtor ATA133 Controller Card
Linksys Wireless PCI Network Card
ASUS 40X CDRW
Creative 16X DVD
HP 2.4X DVD+R
Three Case Fans
Belkin USB 2.0 Card

I'm probably overextending the power supply but have had NO stability issues
for over a year on this board. Before the crash, I did monitor the voltages
and the temperature of the various components. Tyan's system monitor stated
that everything was running normally and within safe parameters.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Otherwise, this is mostly a
heads-up for anyone interested in upgrading to processors not endorsed to
run on this board.

Thanks,
Brian Kilby

How is the battery? Did you try clearing CMOS?

You know, you think that would be the first thing I would check but it
wasn't. I just did the check and the battery is fine. I cleared the CMOS and
had the same experience. I'm not too worried over it, honestly. I intend to
pick up a better board and a few extras. I'll end up getting a new BIOS for
this board and, even if it doesn't work, I'm not going to be out a
tremendous amount of cash.

Thanks for the suggestion, by the way. It was very much appreciated.

try putting you cpu in one at a time.
if one works maybe you have a bad one.
may be your pwr sup.
if neither work:
put old cpus in one at a time
if they work your board may not be compatible with the faster cpus. tyan
websup. states 1900 max for tigerMP.
Still could be PSU. 2400+ will draw a BIT more current than a 1500+
have read a few post elsewhere that state enermax psu often have problems
with AMD MP.
It was either the 3.3v or 5v that don't have enough juice.
