My Tiger MPX is hanging at boot time. I'm trying to boot from the disk
(containing various windows installations) however, after the POST I
sinply get a blinking cursor. I've also tried booting win98 startup
disks, Norton Ghost utility disk, LILO, BIOS update and other disks.
With these I get a similar effect. Some will begin loading ie the Ghost
disk will display "Loading PC DOS" then just hangs there and the system
idles. I tried clearing the CMOS, disconnecting devices and so on,
anyone else have anything similar. Btw this began happening after I
changed a graphics card.

this is the problem. from some odd reason, S2466 does similar
after changing allmost everything. ie, leaving one cd-rom off could
cause this. so far i have found that only resetting BIOS from jumper,
mainpowercord off when doing it, resolves booting issue.

Hi Zeebro,

this is probably caused due to a larger graphics bios. I had the same effect
after removing my Matrox G400. The reserved memory for BIOS-Code is very
limited and several cards competing for this space can cause weird problems.
In my computer I have an ATI All-In-Wonder 8500DV (very large BIOS), an
IDE-RAID card and a SCSI-Controller. The BIOS of all of these needs to be
enbaled, because otherwise the chips on the cards are not properly
initialized. I saved some BIOS space by setting all IDE-Devices in the board
BIOS to NONE. The different BIOS need more space when starting up and reduce
the memory they consume after the init of the cards. Therefore the order in
which the cards are put into the PCI-slots (and with that the order of the
execution of their BIOS code) is very important. Try changing the cards
around.

Hope this can help to solve your problem.

Regards

Andre

Hmm odd stuff. Seems pretty stupid considering this type of board is
likely to have expansion acrds of the latter installed into it. I have a
SCSI and Matrox G/card that both have BIOS on board so I guess the
problem lies here somewhere. I can't really change the slots of them so
I'm notnsure what to do. The system is booting again after removing
various items and all seems ok. Thanks for the responses.

These boards are primarily meant for servers, which would normally not
need a high end graphics card. There are many many people including
myself using them as a workstation, but at least that explains some of
the problem.

The solution is to disable EVERYTHING in the BIOS you don't need. Note
that disabling these things only affects the system while the BIOS is in
control. Once Windows takes control, it doesn't matter what your BIOS
settings are. Specifically, disable things like USB support, as well as
any drives you may not need to boot. Once Windows starts, it will see
and start USB/etc... regardless of the BIOS settings.

Also disable serial and parallel ports, though only the ones you don't
need. I haven't seen windows use them when they are disabled like it
does with USB.
