SATA IDE converter

Hi,
I have an SATA hard drive which I'd like to connect to a motherboard without
SATA.

I bought an IDE to SATA converter for £18 but the drive isn't detected at
all.
However when I connect an IDE hard drive to my other motherboard with SATA
using the adaptor, it works.
I don't know why it works one-way only

Short of buying a PCI SATA card, is it possible to use my SATA drive with my
motherboard?

The adapter is only for using older IDE on newer motherboard with SATA. If
you want to use an SATA drive on a older motherboard you gonna have to buy a
pci controller. Fortunately they're not too expansive. The bad thing about
it is that you have to worry about if the drive will work under dos mode or
if the OS recognized the controller with a clean install and all that crap.
